Melbourne Music Week program

Following on from August’s announcement that Melbourne Music Week is returning in 2011 with a “redefined artistic direction”, the full program for this November’s celebrations has been unveiled and it is so chock full of arty goodness we simply don’t have enough space to write about it all.

Showcasing 130 acts performing at 40 different locations over the course of nine days Melbourne Music Week highlights include: Kubik ( an open-air live music space that is constructed from interconnected, glowing water tanks that change colour in response to music); The Gaslamp Killer; a Ghetto Blaster picnic; ‘How You Livin’ record fair/dance party on the Yarra; the unveiling of a giant Theremin; And dozens of workshops and conferences including a key note speech from the man behind SXSW, Brent Grulke.

Beyond the quivering soundwaves of the seven-metre Theremin there is more music than you can poke the wheel of your fixie at. ‘The Live Music Safari’ is by far one of the most exciting musical events of the fortnight and will see venues present more than 60 acts across one evening on Thursday 24th November. Among these gigs is Spiral Stairs and Gotye at Thousand Pound Bend, Martin Martini at Bennets Lane, The Puta Madre Brothers at Cherry, NorthEast Party House at The John Curtain band Room and FasterLouder’s pick of the lot – Super Wild Horses and Harmony at Pony.

There will also be the ‘Labels Live’ series which was announced a few months ago where independent Melbourne music labels, including Mistletone and Two Bright Lakes, will hold gigs in alternative CBD locations such as the top of Melbourne Central.

And if live music isn’t your thing you can head along to ‘Playing Under The Influence’ at the ACMI where various musicians will present the films that had the greatest influence on their sounds. These include Mick Harvey presenting All Night Long , Tim Rogers presenting Billy Liar, Henry Wagons presenting Dead Man and Vincent Vendetta presenting Dawn of The Dead.

There is so so much more happening at Melbourne Music Week this November, so for the full rundown head to the their website.
