Golden Plains the Sixxxthline-up

Golden Plains The Fifth was so scrumptious that after a weekend of warm Autumn evenings and musical musings our FL reviewer concluded, “Golden Plains was going to be a good festival. It was going to be a fun time. Predictably enough, though, it would inevitably share its mystifying magic with its thousands of fervent followers, reaffirming its inescapable allure.”

If you are yet to experience the inescapable allure of Golden Plains, 2012 is the year you should be transported to the mystifying magic of the Supernatural Amphitheatre in March.

Last week Aunty Meredith told us that the Godfather of Psychedellia Roky Erickson and Bon Iver (replete with a nine-piece band) will be gracing the Plains next year, and this morning she let the rest of the line-up loose.

Joining these two music makers will be folk-country icon Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy; 90s legends and makers of many a woman Urge Overkill; The Screaming Eagle of Soul himself Charles Bradley; garage punks The Black Lips; indie rock forefathers Low and the one and only Kisstroyer ( yeah, really!)

Sorry guys, I'm going to have to disagree here. Bon Iver aside I'd say it's a pretty average line up, and I've heard mixed things about his live show.

Low might be good depending on the set but c'mon was average, but overall, for my money, Laneway craps all over this.

Its pretty pointless comparing festivals really, they are usually just vehicles for bringing acts out to Australia which I am all for.
All I know is I will be buying a ticket to Laneway and am very happy that this festival is finally bringing Bonnie Prince Billy to OZ!

Its pretty pointless comparing festivals really, they are usually just vehicles for bringing acts out to Australia which I am all for.
All I know is I will be buying a ticket to Laneway and am very happy that this festival is finally bringing Bonnie Prince Billy to OZ!

Amazing really, this forum is littered with comments about people saying this BDO line up isn't as good as another one, or not as good as Soundwave. Splendour wasn't as good as last year or when it wasn't in Woodford, or whatever.

All I'm saying is I think this line up is pretty average for my taste in music, which is less skewed towards that indie folk sound that is popular at the moment, and I never much liked any of the other stuff on there..Urge Overkill.... I mean really....

Laneway is a single day festival held in the city whilst Golden Plains is a three day camping festival in rural Victoria. They really aren't comparable. Golden Plains primarily attracts punters based on the reputation of what the festival offers whereas Laneway attracts punters based purely on lineup because that is really all it offers.

Fair enough, I'm pretty much over festivals myself in general.
Laneway & Harvest have the most acts in one place I want to see, whether they are the best festivals remains to be seen as have never attended a Laneway before and this is the first Harvest.

Well let's go back to the apples and oranges point....they are of course different, but I'll spend my money on the one I prefer (chocolate)

Back in the pre kids days I would have been happy to travel to Golden Plains, but it would have taken a better line up than this to get me there. 2010 would have though: Pavement, Dinosaur Jr, Dirty Projectors, Tame Impala, Midnight Juggernauts, Wooden Shjips. For me, vastly superior.

I don't like people comparing BDo to Soundwave.

One is a festival that tries to cover a broad range of genres as well as bringing out massive internationals and upcoming noobs.

The other is Rewind festival for people who had SMP cargo pants.

Bon Iver and Low in the Supernatural Amphitheatre will be amazing.

As for the comparison between GP and Laneway, the style of the festival is more of a contributing factor than the lineup.

GP is in a very relaxed atmosphere, with an easy going crowd, who are there for more than 1 day, so care a little more about their fellow patrons. It is also on a single stage, so no reason to rush anywhere, or move at all, really.

Laneway definitely has its share of single-day dickheads. There are less than most other single-day festivals, due to the lack of major headliners, but still a lot more than you'll get at any multi-day festival, especially GP.

Laneway very much restricts itself to young triple j friendly artists plus a few interesting ones. whereas Golden Plains is almost purely made up of those interesting ones. at the moment the former is more appealing to me but over the years i can see myself finding lineups like Golden Plains more attractive.

Not to start a debate on what counts as 'young triple j friendly artists' but I'd say the majority of the 2012 laneway lineup isn't the typical 'triple j friendly' bands type. I know quite a lot of people who listen to triple j as their main radio station who said "ok i know about 2 - 3 artists on the lineup and the rest I don't know who the hell they are". Although, gives me an opportunity to show them the bands they haven't heard of before and hopefully make fans out of them :)

i guess my defintion of triple j friendly is any band i discover through the station, which is about 10 acts on the lineup. i don't listen to it as much as i used to so i don't know whats played often and whats not.

I don't know if I want to see Ariel Pink's haunted graffiti again after their attrocious performance at laneway Brisbane (well, Ariel Pink himself ruined it. The rest of the band were fine). They sound great on album but Ariel Pink just lets them down so much live.
