Exclusive Florence and theMachine gig in Sydney

Last week Melbourne was treated to a one-off Kasabian gig and now it’s Sydney’s turn for a special one off gig by a much loved English act. Florence and the Machine will play an exclusive show at Sydney’s Seymour Centre on the 15th of November showcasing songs from the new album Ceremonials as part of the Debit MasterCard Priceless Music Series.

Florence’s new album, featuring the tracks Shake It Out and What the Water Gave Me, will be released on Friday 28th October, so punters at the Sydney gig will be among the first in the world to hear Florence’s new songs live. Her most recent Australian tour – for last year’s Splendour in the Grass – was met with rave reviews, with FL’s reviewer in Melbourne reporting that “The brilliance of the set design coupled with Flo’s peerless vocal and a perfectly levelled band makes the whole thing a joy to watch, but in amongst the spectral costume and tribal, pagan drumming there are moments that are genuinely quite tense and eerie.”

Although this will be a one off gig we certainly hope that Florence follows Kasabian’s lead and makes her way back to Australia early next year for a full tour.

Friend posted this Ian Mackaye quote today. Relevant.

People that are fifteen, sixteen, seventeen years old, music is their life. And the idea that they can’t go see a band because they’re not old enough just doesn’t make any sense at all. To me, playing a show where people under the age of eighteen or under the age of twenty one are not allowed in is the same thing as not allowing women in, or Asians. It’s a significant part of the population that’s been ruled out for what reason? I’ve never played a show, knowingly at least, that wasn’t all ages. Music is for all people, that’s clear. And I don’t know why other people would ever accept conditions that were set by an industry as insidious as the alcohol industry. Why is music treated as a sideline to a party? To just getting fucked up, I just don’t understand it.

This is probably the worst analogy I've ever seen. It is nothing like playing a show and not allowing women or Asians in. Absolutely no correlation.

Also saying that these are conditions imposed by the alcohol industry is a complete falsehood. These are conditions imposed by society. In many places where alcohol is served to consenting adults, children are not allowed. This is not being unfair to children. It is based on many reasons such as alcohol being damaging to developing brains.

To claim that the music is a sideline to a party is ridiculous. Going to a gig and having a couple of beers does in no way equate to getting fucked up.
