2011 ARIA Awards nominationsand winners

The winners for the 25th ARIA Awards have been announced in Sydney tonight with Boy and Bear and Gotye scooping up most of the pointy statues

Gotye’s new record Making Mirrors was ineligible for contention in this year’s awards as it was released after the cut-off date for submissions, so all of Gotye’s wins are for the inescapable single Somebody That I Used To Know single. The track had already bagged three ARIA Artisan awards in the Best Video, Engineer Of The Year, and Producer Of The Year catagories before sweeping the field at this evening’s awards.

Read on for all the winners and to ponder what exactly Adult Alternative is, how so many people could buy an Altiyan Childs album, and why there’s no category for de-but albums.

Did anyone else think/notice that when Billy Thorpe was announced the winner for the Adult Contemporary award that (the presenters) Stevie Nicks and possibly even Richard Wilkins didn't realise he's not around to receive it with their reactions? Awqward moment..

From what I saw of it though, it was much better than recent years (not that there's a high bar to reach or anything).

Also, Tom & Alex are even less funny on tv than radio, who would've thought it was possible! (.... and no that's got nothing to do with sexual preferences, annoying/unfunny people are annoying/unfunny to me no matter their preference/colour ie. Deni Hines!)

Still horrible! The boy and bear album was very average and dont get me started on the gotye single!!! http://www.4zzzfm.org.au/reviews/albums/gotye-somebody-i-used-know-single

Gareth Liddiard although he would never win definitely deserved the win over Gotye

Good news for Atlyan (whatever) Childs. The win should bring in more money for his methlabs!

Whenever I think this, I remember that John Safran's Music Jamboree exists and everything is okay again.

Boy & Bear winning album of the year is depressing, surely we have a lot better than a bunch of hipsters from Sydney Uni pretending to be Mumford and Sons. Wtf was on that guy's head? I didn't know American Apparel sold skunk corpses.

It was good to see Gotye win all the things and have more friends than Guy Sebastian. Art vs. Science were shithouse. It's a shame that Grinderman didn't win anything but I suppose Kyle & Jackie O's million listeners probably don't know what a Nick Cave is.

Also it was nice to see that Molly Meldrum and Delta Goodrem are still alive, although it's a shame Delta's voice wasn't as good as her nose job.

Highlight: Wiggles. Especially Greg- the only yellow Wiggle I recognise.

Last year was funnier. Jessica Mauboy to host 2012!

Last year's ceremony was a shambles (...moreso than usual). Powderfinger didn't know what they won, Jessica Mauboy couldn't speak/read, A&J Stone were dopey fucking hippies and the international guests were somehow more awkward than ever before.

EDIT: Just remembered that he was talking about the awards going to the wrong people. Not 100% sure who he was referring to there, I usually disagree with pretty much every winner.

guy sebastian's song - highest selling??? anybody else hear it for the first time as the nominations were read out? thank fuck i was spared that wankery. highest selling should be dropped as a catagory anyway. the outcome's usually rigged isn't it? explains all former highest selling guy sebastian singles... also speaking of selling things, ben and joel madden have exactly what to do with anything? they look like internet sex predators trying to dress like youths.

and pnau should have taken out best dance release... cut copy only make multiple variations on one song. boring. that fluff about eskimo joe and their incredible journey made me want to vomit. kylie managed to not look like a tool for once while speaking. got sick of seeing wally's face... can't stand the clip for stiutk, and the song's only 'ok'. loved seeing chrissie amphlett and noah taylor sharing a private joke while boy & bear were strugling through their speech. all up the 25th arias was a bit light and fluffy for me.

tv ratings plummet.

After struggling to secure a broadcaster for this year's annual music industry prize night, organisers will almost certainly face the same battle in 12 months time - pulling just 369,000 viewers nationally.

While the result is a strong one for Nine's digital channel Go! it was almost half last year's widely-panned performance on Network Ten. Despite big name drawcards including Kylie Minogue, Delta Goodrem and The Wiggles, the production was slated on social media as lack lustre and pedestrian.

It was trounced in its 7.30pm timeslot by the retro return of Ten's It's A Knockout (1.029 million viewers), Nine's 60 Minutes (886,000), ABC's Restoration Home (765,000) and Seven's Dog Patrol (724,000).

But there were standout live performances for true fans, including best artist male Gotye and female Kimbra combining on the single of the year, Somebody That I Used To Know.

I agree with DPLS, it's all because it was on GO. I only knew it was on tonight because of the ARIAs drinking game article on Pedestrian, and only knew it was on Go after trawling through the tv guide online. What do you expect putting it on the channel for leftovers and reruns. Bit sad that the Australian Music Industry's biggest night doesn't even get aired on a regular free to air channel.

I get the feeling the advertising budget was down from last year, despite their best intentions. A few years back you'd be smacked in the face with the ARIA news for a month leading up. Now it's kind of disappeared until a few days prior.

Not to mention: An Aboriginal gets the Best World Music ARIA while a kiwi gets the Best Australian Female ARIA. Disregarding their music (they're both good) WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK?

berlinchair101

berlinchair101 said on the 29th Nov, 2012

I thought I heard that. He also slurred quite a bit, which is a sign of someone who suffered a serious brain injury. Poor Molly. I don't think he's well at all.

I thought The Jezebels turned in a really good performance, they are usually quite boring live.

Wilkins verbally masturbating in front of Taylor Swift was awkward. He should never be allowed to talk. Rusty Rockets made me giggle with the minimum amount of fucks he gave.

We really don't need any internationals at the Arias but you'd think it wouldn't be hard to make make sure at least one of the three we got were nominated for the only international award?

Frenzal and FL twitter feeds were LOL.

Kimbra also performed really well. I rate that song. 10/10 would bang.

Needed more performances from Aus artists and less shots of Ruby Rose or that wax goblin, Havanah Brown DJing.

Wilkins verbally masturbating in front of Taylor Swift was awkward. He should never be allowed to talk. Rusty Rockets made me giggle with the minimum amount of fucks he gave.

lets just be grateful he wasn't actually masturbating.

We really don't need any internationals at the Arias but you'd think it wouldn't be hard to make make sure at least one of the three we got were nominated for the only international award?

i think it's essential to have international popstars at the event. the only media attention the event has received has been related to Taylor and Nicki. people may argue that the night should be about recognising Australian music excellence but anyone who has a passing interest in the local scene would know that the nominations list hardly reflected the true quality of music out there. so i don't think we should be too precious about protecting the night's integrity. should be just about maximising exposure.

To be fair, Richard Wilkins probably boned her after the show.

The guy has an unbelievable reputation with the ladies.

You're thinking of Dead Letter Circus, Gman.

So, back to the question. Do you think that Molly saying Gay Sebastian is:

a) Slurring his words, and harmless, unfortunate side effect of his accident
b) A payback for something Guy has done
c) Outing the guy in an extremely public way.
d) ??

hey! Dead Letter Circus aren't that bad. the debut album has some solid tracks and aside from the frontman they're pretty enjoyable live.

Oh, I love them; I was just correcting Gman. Dead Letter Chorus and Circus always get mixed up.

I have also heard this and it mystifies me. Do not want.

I didn't see it, but I can confirm that people with brain injuries do suffer from slurred speech afterwards, to the extent that it can be difficult to understand what they are saying.

Molly looked so out of it when he said the 'Gay/Guy" gaffe. He was slurring and leaning on his joke Christmas ladder for support. Dude's not well.
