Tom Morello: The Nightwatchmanwill tour Oz this summer

Tom Morello was last on our shores in 2008 for Rage Against The Machine’s triumphant Big Day Out set, and according the man himself he will be back in solo mode some time this summer.

Speaking with FasterLouder writer davidswan about his new Nightwatchman album World Wide Rebel Songs, Morello said: “It’s my hope to get down to do Nightwatchman shows in Australia in the new year. We’re figuring that out right now.”

Morello also let slip that he plans to embark on a ‘virtual’ tour of the globe so that fans in the more far-flung corners of the earth will get to hear the new Nightwatchman tunes as well: “We’re also doing something special, called the ‘World Wide Rebel tour’, a virtual tour of the planet where it’s a concert in one location that will have unique content 34 countries around the globe, including Australia. It’s a half hour or 40 minutes, I wanted to do something that was internet accessible and totally free. The album’s called World Wide Rebel Songs, and so I deserve to be playing it around the world and if I won’t be able to play Sri Lanka or Angola in the next six months, I still want the music to be able to get there.”

Morello was more than candid throughout his long chat with FL, which will published in full on FL this Wednesday, even revealing that he is sure there will be another Rage album in the near future, “When we reformed in 2007 we intentionally left some of the things off the table that were destabilsing us the first time around. We didn’t do interviews, we didn’t have a manger, we didn’t have a record company. We didn’t have an attorney. It was just a band, friends playing music. It felt great. One of the things that was very tumultuous the first time around was trying to write songs. We’re four guys that have passionate, and sometimes very different, opinions. So it was intentional in the beginning… let’s just have some good times. We can rock people out of their minds, lets do that for a while. That’s not to say there will never be new Rage Against the Machine music, I think there will be.”
