Pearl Jam added to the Big DayOut rumour mill

Yes, it’s another Big Day Out rumour. But this one doesn’t come from an anonymous ‘source’ like the Big Day Out Spy or Miss Info. Nor does it come from the lips of rumour maestro Nui Te Koha. This very exciting rumour comes from Cherry Bar owner, band manager former lawyer and second best dressed man in Melbourne’s rock community Mr James Young. (It’s hard to go past Dave Graney for the best dressed honours)

Anyway, Young dropped by Triple M in Melbourne to announce on air that “The word is that the Big Day Out next year could [see] Pearl Jam in every [major capital] city in Australia.” He also stated the obvious by mentioning that “This would be a huge coup”, but he refrained from stirring the pot further by making note of the fact that Pearl Jam’s drummer Matt Cameron also bashes the skins for Soundgarden… and to state the obvious a Pearl Jam/Soundgarden double would be a monstrously huge coup (and is also totally something we just made up).

Eddie Vedder and the gang recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of Pearl Jam with the PJ Twenty concert – a two-day festival that also featured Chris Cornell, Queens of the Stone Age, Mudhoney, Liam Finn, The Strokes and more. And they’ve also just released a new track Ole which can be downloaded for free from the band’s website

i'm not going to doubt this guys integrity but this means nothing more than the fact that BDO are chasing Pearl Jam as headliners, something i'm sure they do every year with them and plenty of other big name bands.

PJ headlining would me get to BDO without a second thought but with the shear number of bands in the rumour mill this isn't much to get excited about.

As nice as it may sound, I couldn't imagine Matt drumming for both Soundgarden & Pearl Jam at the same gig.

Either band would certainly sell it for me though.

not sure why you're dissing miss_info who kind of makes it her business to get these things right. no offence to james young, but he clearly is just speculating (sarcasm_mister is right about that). faster louder is becoming a bit of a joke on these things, clearly just reporting on every rumour because you'll get some page impressions. why not try and do your readers a favour by being a reliable source for music news, rather than trotting out every bit of dumb gossip. this shit should be beneath you people.

As much as I love Pearl Jam and would probably miss the birth of my own child to see them in concert, I would much prefer a stand-alone tour rather than a BDO tour. However, if Pearl Jam did do the BDO thing, like with Rage Against The Machine I would rock up at around 7pm as the Big Day Out does nothing for me.

pearl jam have commented before on the chances of a pearl jam/soundgarden/temple of the dog tour. apparently they considered it, but there was no way matt cameron could do it for a whole tour.

If BDO could guarantee us 2-2.5hrs PJ shows I'd be IN, if it would be bullsh!t 90 minute sets that would be very disappointing.

even if they did get a full length set, for festivals they tend to bust out a pretty generic greatest hits setlist. fine for the casual fans or people who don't really know them, but not so great if you've already seen them a few times.

No idea how much they'd get for BDO, but in terms of timing, their Australian tours have been '95, '98, '03, '06, and '09. So apart from the gap between '98 and '03 they've come every three years. Which makes a 2012 tour plausible timing wise, although I would have thought it would be more likely if there had been more announcements about a new album.

FUCK YES.

PJ played a new song on Jimmy Fallon recently, and they are doing their PJ20 thing at the moment so with any luck this is one rumor that will become fact.

I am going insane waiting for confirmation of it.

on another PJ note, is anyone going to check out the PJ20 doco being played this month? I'm going next Tuesday. so fucking excited. :D

PJ are reasonably frequent tourers of Australia and have never played BDO.

They can get a million dollars a gig playing stadiums in Australia. Why would they play BDO?

I just don't see much point putting any faith into something that is nothing more than someone suggesting the name of a band that exists.

I don't understand why people need to be such downers about it. if I wanna hope and dream that my favourite band is gonna tour I don't want to hear anyone stomping all over it and destroying the glimmer of hope just because of an assumption. if the rumour turns out to be just that, I'll live with it, but I get the feeling the downers will be on here quick as a flash to say 'I told you so'. well, good for them for knowing everything.

I'm just gonna bide my time, and keep that positive vibe going.

To my knowledge, every Australian PJ tour is with Michael Chugg. Certainly all the recent ones are. Chugg has nothing to do with BDO.

they've gone back to doing festivals since Reading 2006. but BDO doesn't have a great history with safety.

on the other hand Pink Floyd have no such qualms.

as long as you dont cry or yearn if the hope is thwarted that's great, but in the face of the facts, not rumours, i'm still wondering why you'd rather hope for Pearl Jam at the Big Day Out rather than a full-scale stand alone tour down the track given the latter is both more likely to happen and more likely to be a fully satisfying experience

You said you think in terms of what comes next. So what comes next? I hear you’ve been recording.

We do have five or six demos that we feel good about — just rough mixes and things. But first, we have to rehearse for the tour and relearn those songs. We were just having a meeting over the phone about which ones to do. Sometime next year, hopefully, we’ll go back in and record some music. We need to get about seven or eight more songs down to have a full record.

So safe to assume no new album in time for an early '12 tour. Makes the BDO seem (even) less likely.

don't worry, I'm not one to sit crying into my beer if things don't turn out the way I'd hoped. that being said, any glimmer of hope I have of seeing PJ back in the country, I will cling to with all my might. it's not that I'd necessarily prefer to see them at a festival than their own full concert. of course I'd rather they tour on their own so I get a couple of hours of PJ goodness, instead of a shorter festival set, but any live PJ is good PJ in my eyes!

BH is right, their last tour was a huge success. to be honest, when they do return I hope they do the open air venues again. I've seen them at both indoor and outdoor stadiums and their last tour was my favourite by far.

i'm living in ny since last year and went to pj20 in milwaukee. it was an experience of a lifetime with pj playing 3 & 3.5 hours over both nights. the temple of the dog songs with chris cornell were a real highlight - hunger strike was my favourite moment. a 90 minute set @ bdo wouldn't do them justice (or satisfy the fans) !!!

Pearl Jam will definitely not play BDO. Why would they break a longstanding promoter relationship to earn less money at BDO?

I will be highly surprised if they ever tour Australia again through someone other than Michael Chugg.

I took my girlfriend for her brithday as she WAS a fan.

Thankfully after that gig, I'll never have to go to another Ben Harper gig again. She ain't going back.

Not quite sure what Ben Harper sees in Relentless 7, I've seen them three times (thankfully all were short opening slots), and they were all bad. Still haven't heard anyone say anything good about him with them, which is sad because I saw him with the Innocent Criminals in 2000 and he was great.
