Dane Certificate and AdamHarding cover 'Do Re Mi'

Given that 2011 marks the 20th anniversary of Nevermind’s release, tributes to Nirvana will no doubt start regularly appearing around the internet and on festival stages this summer (although hopefully we’ll all be spared the pain of having to see Jared Letto pay his respects to Kurt ever again).

One really interesting tribute (of sorts) that has just been released is a cover of Kurt Cobain’s last known recording Do Re Mi by Melbourne-via-Geelong film maker Adam Harding and musician Dane Certificate.

Having made filmclips for the likes of DJ Shadow, Warpaint, Lou Barlow and Adalita, Harding teamed up with Certificate to record the tune and make an accompanying video. As he explains, “Recording a Nirvana cover is something I would ordinarily avoid, but when Dane suggested we cover Do Re Mi, I thought it could just be an interesting project since it never really was a Nirvana song, just a solo demo recorded by Kurt.”

The resulting song is a sweet and spooky take on Cobain’s original, with layered vocals and splashy drums, half of which was recorded in Melbourne by Dane and the other half in LA by Adam.

As for the video, much of the footage was shot at the Ear Knife studios in LA, and Kevin Rutmanis from the Melvins made the doll which is featured throughout.

Do Re Mi by Adam Harding and Dane Certificate:

Adam Harding and Friends (feat. Dane Certificate) open for Sebadoh in Melbourne on September 18th and 19th.
