First J Awards nominationsannounced

The first three nominations for ‘Album Of The Year’ in the 2011 J Awards have been announced this week, with hip-hop and electro records leading the field early.

Selected on “quality and what defined that year in music” the first nominations include Art Vs Science’s The Experiment, Drapht’s The Life Of Riley and Architecture In Helsinki’s Moment Bends.

Previous winner’s of this award include Tame Impala for their critically acclaimed debut Innerspeaker, Wolfmother, The Panics and Sarah Blasko. The winning record is selected for “being an outstanding musical work of art; for its creativity, musicianship and its contribution to Australian music”, and the decision is made by triple j staff including Music Director Richard Kingsmill and presenters.

The J Awards also include ‘Australian Music Video of the Year’ and ‘Unearthed Artist of the Year’, which last year were taken out by Washington for her Sunday Best clip and Boy & Bear.

Winners will be announced in November, during triple j’s Ausmusic Month.

the first nominee has been announced for this year's J Award. and it is none other than The Life of Riley by Drapht.

i have no understanding of aussie hip hop whatsoever so i won't comment on this nomination. but i hope to see Jack Ladder, Sparkadia and Cut Copy on the list soon.

i can see The Panics and Boy & Bear being nominated almost by default. i haven't spent much time with either album but they are both triple j darlings so i will be surprised if they're not recognised.

i haven't heard this album either. is it decent?

One of my favourite this year, it has very catchy songs on there that gets stuck in your head. It's quite different to their past releases though.

They announce them differently each year. I think it was 1 per month to begin with + extras in 'Aus Music Month (November)'. Then they started announcing them in no particular logical way, then it was all done during AMM, and now I guess they figured they have nothing to hype up now Splendour is over so they are doing J-award stuff.

This exactly. They're fun live and they've got some really catchy tunes. The album wasn't great, but nowhere near as bad as PoA made it out to be.

The Philly Jays released a song called "I Don't Wanna Party"

Dan Williams, the drummer for Art Vs Science, used to drum for The Philly Jays.

Thus, at least 33% of Art Vs Science is against partying.

Conclusion: they are not a completely "party" band

i thought Cruel Guards, Apocolypso and Innerspeaker were all great records. maybe not the best of that year. but every person will have a different opinion on that. so the fact that the J Award went to a more than decent album in those years is good enough for me.

I said should. Although I think Apocalypso and Innerspeaker were the best Australian albums of their year. Not Cruel Guards though.

haha i'm the opposite to you. at the time i did think Apocalypso and Innerspeaker were the best of the year. but In Ghost Colours and Foreign Tapes has aged much better than those two and so have taken over. Cruel Guards had a lot of great competition in its year but still comes out on top for me 4yrs later.

I've never listened to Foreign Tapes, but with time Cut Copy has started to shit me, whereas the Presets are still awesome as long as I don't see them at festivals.
