Rocking Horse Records underthreat
Tue 28th Jun, 2011 in Local News
For close to forty years Rocking Horse Records has kept Brisbane’s music lovers up-to-date with all the best local tunes and latest vinyl releases. However, competition from major retail chains and a shift towards purchasing music on-line has put the store’s future in doubt.
According to the Courier Mail, Brisbane’s last major independent record store has launched a half price sale this week in a last ditch attempt to avoid closure.
Owner Warwick Vere told the Mail: “We have been looking around for another (suitable) site for a year but there is nothing that was realistic and you would have to make a giant leap of faith to sign a three-year lease in these conditions. Vinyl sales are very strong and if we could turn every CD we had into a vinyl record then we would be right. It’s a pity it looks like we can’t continue but the sums don’t add up.”
Over the last few years a number of Brisbane’s independent record stores have closed their doors due to similar pressures, including Toombul Music and Skinny’s.
