Odd Future makes the frontpage by calling Brisbaneracist

Odd Future, especially the group’s leader Tyler the Creator, has been widely criticised for their lyrics with a swag of ‘think pieces’ from music journalists recycling their ‘Emenim controversy’ essays from 2001 and musicians including Tegan and Sara accusing the group of “vile… misogyny and homophobia”.

None of this seemed to make much of an impact on our major newspaper or TV stations – even when the group sold out a run of shows, including three nights at the iconic Sydney Opera House, which seemed to create a perfect set-up for a series of hand wringing editorials about arts funding, the dangers of hip-hop and ‘kids today’. Obviously ‘Carbon Cate’ was just too good a story to bump from the opinion pages.

However, with the gang now safely back home in LA, the ‘news’ that Tyler found Brisbane to be racist has been splashed across the front (web) pages of several major papers, with a story headlined “’They Hate Niggas Out Here’: US hip hop star labels Brisbane racist” leading the most read entertainment articles on the Fairfax newspaper websites today, ahead of an informative article bearing the headline “Outrage as Smurfs called racist”.

The news picks up on a series of comments Tyler made on his rambling often incoherent Twitter account noting that ” Out Here In Brisbane, Australia. People Out Here Are Racist As Fuck. I’m Uncomfortable And Want To Go Home. I Get THis Weird Vibe I Love Australia Tho Sydney And Melbourne Was Sick, But For Some Reason The Couple People Ive Come In Contact With In Brisbane Are Dicks. So Fucking Happy. Australia Was Fucking Fun Over All. Thanks To The White People Down Under (Except For Them Hating Racist From Earlier).”

I love how you come on a thread and spout about healthy debate and peace and love and shit. I have found you to be the least tolerant of all the people on here. You openly shown your affection for other people and their different views. I mean to me you were a complete wanka, and what, all for some Glowsticks? I didn't ridicule you because of the glowsticks, they were merely a form of attack used to belittle you for the moronic and offensive comments you made to the majority of the other forum users (you do remember that part, yes?).

Second of all, no, you are correct. I have in fact spent hardly any time in rural QLD, NSW or Victoria for that matter. The difference that separates people when a debate arises though, is that some of us learn from the world around us, and others (such as yourself) set themselves up as the perfect target to waste a few mins of a lunch break on.

I don't know it all. Matter of fact there's much I don't know. But I travel, I observe, I interact with different people in different places. Basically anything that allows me to gain a better understanding of my surroundings. Now, you may well (and justifiably) argue that a decent portion of comments that I make on this website are rude and derivative, but the fact that you want to pull me out on a social observation I have made based on the differing mentalities of people as a whole, based on State, is rather preposterous. I agree, you haven't missed the entire point, so I'm not going to pull you up on that. The fact that you don't quite seem to understand the idea that someone can draw such conclusions without being "racist" (especially while being a self-confessed homophobe) is however something that is detrimental to your case.

Stereotyping exists for a reason. You need to understand this before you stand on your soapbox and rabble on about the pride you have in your State. No one is attacking Queensland, but like any area/city/state/village/town/country/race/whateveryoulike you are able to draw generalised conclusions on the way things differ to one another.

It's no ones fault but your own if you look at it and web pages that get more views get more ads, therefore more pages of the same style are created.

What I think you'll see (and are already seeing) is that there will be a massive reduction in sales of hard copies of things like best sellers. The kind of novels that people read once and never touch again. Michael Crichton, James Patterson, Matthew Reilly, Tom Clancy... that sort of thing.

These will move towards electronic sales because they're the sort of thing people consume once, rather than want to collect. For people who read whilst travelling etc. electronic books obviously make sense due to available space.

More serious literature and reference books will always exist in paper format because people want these on their shelf and they are also not the sort of thing you read from start to finish like a novel.

You're making the same argument as vinyl collectors though. And while they're still available they are not at the forefront of musical formats these days. Books will always exist, but just as buying tracks off itunes has decreased cd sales, the ability to download a book for a fraction of the price will supersede owning a physical copy for your run-of-the-mill reader. Clutter is also something that is pushed as a selling factor these days. While you or I might feel more comfort from a massive stack of records and a pile of books around the house, there are many people that don't see the charm in filling your lounge room with these things.

Yes, but the simpletons that read all the Stieg Larssons and Dan Browns are no different to the Twilight crazies, they will follow the trends via Kindle. The level of physical production will drop and fall in line with demmand.

Have a look at a Kindle. They look remarkably like a book in terms of colour, contrast, and brightness. I definitely think you can read these for hours without any of the issues that you get from reading a computer screen for hours.

The iPad is obviously not specifically designed as an e-reader, so reading an electronic book off one is far less appealing and is more like reading a computer screen.

To summarise for you: Yes, books will not become obsolete, but they will take a backseat in the grand scheme of the way we read. Many people in this era don't feel that physical copies of music and writing add character to their surrounding, but clutter. The masses will flock towards the ease of electronic reading, just like they have for many other things. Select people will still collect books, and when I'm next in America 30 years down the track I'll be sure to pop into Target to remind myself that I am a retard and that you are in fact the greatest man who ever lived.

What I think you'll see (and are already seeing) is that there will be a massive reduction in sales of hard copies of things like best sellers. The kind of novels that people read once and never touch again. Michael Crichton, James Patterson, Matthew Reilly, Tom Clancy... that sort of thing.

These will move towards electronic sales because they're the sort of thing people consume once, rather than want to collect. For people who read whilst travelling etc. electronic books obviously make sense due to available space.

More serious literature and reference books will always exist in paper format because people want these on their shelf and they are also not the sort of thing you read from start to finish like a novel.

I don't know if you refer to the "best seller" type stuff and airport novels as the same, but since your use of electronic devices on planes are restricted I think airport novels will always be a big market- which is usually that Patterson, Clancy, Dan Brown type stuff. I'm not sure if I agree about reference books entirely, because while some people may like to collect them, a majority of people use them just to access the information, which is much easier and preferable in online databases. At the universities I've been at hardly anyone uses hardcopy reference books, they go straight for the online databases
