WAMi Awards review andfestival wrap-up
Tue 31st May, 2011 in Local News
Saturday night wrapped up the fantastic week-long local music party that was the 2011 WAMi Festival. With so much going on this year, chances are you missed some of it, so here are some highlights.
The Bakery hosted a sundowner prior to the WAMi11 Opening Party, which meant a decent crowd when the festivities were kicked off by Georgi Kay, Rabbit Island, Bastians Happy Flight, Usurper of Modern Medicine, Abbe May and Canyons. It was an excellent choice of festival venue, and the Bakery staff were the perfect hosts, working long hours to make sure it all went smoothly.
Throughout the week, specialist genre showcases were held, including a Funk Showcase featuring Kurtis Blow and a Jazz Showcase featuring Alice Humphries out the front of Ecila.
The WAMi Saturday Spectacular was held in multiple venues across Northbridge and gave over 50 bands some face-time with an audience. It was all free so that music fans and the curious could wander between venues sampling a good cross section of talent. Our reviewer was very taken with the Spectacular’s musical selection at Ya Ya’s.

WAMi 2011 spread the craft awards throughout the Saturday Spectacular, involving more people in this year’s event. Emkat flew between venues all day to photograph the winners with their cakes and tweet the results to the rest of Perth.
As the sun set on what must have been an exhausting week for the WAM team, everyone met up again at the Bakery for the awarding of the last of the WAMingtons.
