Red Riders call it quits

After eight years, two albums, countless house parties and at least one line-up change Sydney’s Red Riders have announced they are calling it quits.

The band posted a message on their website this morning which said: After eight immensely fun years of playing together as Red Riders it seems like now’s the right time to bow out. We’re all still the closest of friends, but just feel like the entity that is Red Riders has run its course, and rather than grind something that’s special to us into the ground, we’d like to call it quits while we can still stand proudly behind everything that we’ve made together.

The band released their debut album Replica Replica in 2006 which, with its catchy indie-pop tunes, became an instant favourite with the j’s. Following extensive touring including a spot on the Big Day Out lead singer Adrian Deutsch announced he was quitting the band to pursue a solo project , leaving Alex Girgg to pick up the vocal duties and The Vines’ Brad Heald to handle guitar while his other band was on hiatus.

In mid-2009 after a mini-break Red Riders released their sophomore album Drown In Colour about which its FasterLouder reviewer said: “There’s little flaw to be found and enough substance to warrant a new sense of interest in the band… no doubt we’re looking at a revitalised band with a newfound sense of purpose.”

It seemed this wasn’t to the be the case., however, with Grigg spending much of the last twelve months touring with his other band The Straight Arrows who released their debut album It’s Happening to much critical praise in November and Brad back recording with The Vines whose new record is due out this year.

Fans will have one last chance to see Red Riders before they bow out completely with the band noting We’re gonna play a couple of special farewell shows in Sydney and Melbourne that we’ll announce real soon, but otherwise the upcoming shows supporting Children Collide will be our last. Hope to see you there!
