Washington’s tour oflaughter and forgetting

When not picking up awards Washington can usually be found playing a live set on a festival tour. Having just wrapped up a tour with the Big Day Out, she has booked her band in for another national jaunt with the regional Groovin’ The Moo tour and found time for a few headline shows along the way.

With support from American folk rock singer Lissie and local psychedelic indie crew Deep Sea Arcade, the tour will roll thorough Hobart, Melbourne, Brisbane. Sydney, Adelaide and Perth in April and May.

Oh, and Washington may have a soft spot for Mariah Carey , but she’s is showing off her literary smarts, dubbing the trip ‘The Tour of Laughter and Forgetting’ after the classic Milan Kundera novel. Hey kids, those librarian glasses aren’t just for show!

Wednesday 27th April – Wrest Point Showroom, Hobart
Friday 29th April – Forum Theatre, Melbourne
Wednesday 4th May – The Tivoli, Brisbane
Friday 6th May – Metro Theatre, Sydney
Wednesday 11th May – Governor Hindmarsh Hotel, Adelaide
Friday 13th May – The Astor Theatre, Perth

Lissie does some pretty cool cover songs, but her album is pretty standard pop (actually would go pretty well with Washington).

Not to mention Deep Sea Arcade - quality live act, them.
I don't think she's standard pop, personally; think there's a bit more to her than that.

"Standard" is probably selling it short. Lets just say I was initially blown away by her voice, while the songs on "Catching a Tiger" didn't really have the same impact.

I can see the appeal, hopefully she gets some decent stage time.

Smaller venues than I would have expected for Washington. Was expecting Enmore for Sydney and Palace for Melbourne, will be very surprised if these don't sell quick

I wouldn't be surprised if she was playing the Enmore by the end of the year. Very happy with the Metro, though.

Well, she never used to wear them until her press pics for her first album were released. So I'm inclined to say yes, they are indeed for show.

This wordy young woman, who was born in Papua New Guinea in 1986, has more in common with the wordy young men of another time, another place – late-70s London, to be precise, when it was customary for singers with names such as Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson to sing songs that suggested they had ingested whole dictionaries and washed them down with jug-fulls of bile.

The truth: Good voice, strong songs. Is that enough? Over to you, Universal (they've just signed her).
Most likely to: Be this year's model.
Least likely to: Get happy!! – she's better angry.

I'd never thought to compare her to Blondie before, but I can sort of sense a bit of Debbie Harry in a couple of Liar tracks, now that I think of it.

Big gaps after the Melb and Syd shows. I'd expect additional dates to be added.

Not a fan of Washington, but she did sell out the Corner for four nights straight late last year.

Yeah, that was crazy. I saw her on that tour, absolutely packed room in Wollongong. Was really good!
