Perth Fringe Festival 2011

It has been 30 years since Artrage has directed a Fringe Festival in this state, but the drought is over folks, they’re bringing the joy that is Fringe back to WA.

On 4 February, the Spiegeltent at the Perth Cultural Centre will open its doors and welcome us to Fringe World for a full three weeks of Carnivale.

When you step through the doors, you will be transported back into the decadent 1920’s underground full of award-winning cabaret, comedy, burlesque, short performance pieces and musical acts from the world’s best fringe festivals.

A Spiegeltent is a unique, mystical, world-famous travelling venue never before seen in Perth. The name is Dutch for “mirror tent” and it is made of hand carved wood, leaded glass, mirrors and canvas. The Pearl, is over 100 years old and is one of a very few left in existence. The historical custodians have toured the Spiegeltent for five generations but until now, have never sold one. Enter Artrage and Lotterywest, and The Pearl promises to become an iconic venue for cultural events in Perth for many years to come.

2011 will see the inaugural Fringe World Summit taking place at Fringe World where the brightest and boldest fringe minds from the world over will gather to inspire each other. Following on from this, Perth will have its own full-scale fringe festival in 2012. The Fringe World Summit is free, but you will need to register here to attend.

Fringe World Freebies is an array of free acts on the outdoor stage from 6-10pm every night. Get a taste of cabaret, circus, stand-up, DJs, burlesque, swing, salsa, rockabilly and gypsy sounds. The opening party on Friday 4 February is free and features The Woohoo Revue, King Wasabi, Barry Morgan’s World of Organs, Sugar Blue Burlesque, the Sunshine Brothers and Carnivale costumed salsa dancers.
