Sydney indie boys The Holidays have been awarded the Red Bull Award for Best Debut Release as part of the 6th Australian Music Prize, the winner of which is due to announced in Sydney on Thursday March 3rd.
The Red Bull Award, past winners of which include Gotye, Bluejuice, Oh Mercy and Jack Ladder, is given to a band nominated on the AMP long-list who is recognised as having outstanding potential.
The Holidays took home the award for their first record Post Paradise, which has won the four-piece much critical praise and was described by its FL reviewer as, “The greatest tropical party soundtrack of the year.”
The prize itself is $15,000 in flights and accommodation to travel to Los Angeles and a week in the Red Bull studio in Santa Monica. The Holidays’ singer Simon Jones has said that the award “…is a really important boost at the start of what we’re hoping will be a big year” and that the band plan to use the studio to lay down demos for another album.
The nine shortlisted acts for The 6th Australian Music Prize will be revealed in full at the Sydney Opera House on Wednesday, February 2nd. Past winners have included Eddy Current Supression Ring, The Mess Hall, Augie March, The Drones and, of course, last year’s controversial number one Lisa Mitchell.
