The Black Keys pull out of BigDay Out

The Big Day Out promoters have announced that The Black Keys will be unable to perform on any of the 2011 Big Day Out events in Australia or New Zealand due to exhaustion.

A statement from the band has been posted as to explain the change to the lineup:

“The Black Keys are sorry to announce the cancellation of the New Zealand and Australian tour including all appearances at the Big Day Out touring festival as well as a portion of the European tour in March. An arduous year of touring and promotion has drained the band and necessitated time off.

Dan and Patrick wish to thank all of you who have shown such incredible support since the release of ‘Brothers’ and have helped make the album a success.”

Paul Dempsey has been announced as a replacement on the bill and will be reforming his band especially for the tour.

exhaustion - 1 week before tour. sold out sideshows. piss poor. never turn your back on your fans unless it's a serious matter. i hope it's more than just exhaustion - it would be easier to understand. they must be tired from counting their money.

I understand pulling in another international this close to the start would be near impossible but couldn't the at least have gotten Something for Kate? Paul Dempsy is a shithouse replacement.

hey - sorry - yes it was a joke - of course - but don't doubt it won't happen - no rescheduled shows here for their fans - pure cancellations - the next shows will be in a bigger venue and the tickets will cost $90+ guaranteed - worst part is you have to hear of the cancellation via everyone else except for the band - not cool - and the funny thing is i was too scared to buy a stone temple pilots ticket because i thought they were the unstable ones - life goes on though as they say - time for a beer!!!!

This is bullshit, the only people I wanted to see pre iggy were die antwoord and the black keys. Now I'll see Crystal Castles I guess, which is hardly a consolation considering they are bollocks live. Enmore show would have been great, they'll almost certainly play the Hordern on a return tour.

though i'm basically just going to see tool and everything else is a bonus, black keys would have been in my top 3 most anticipated acts for bdo

It is with incredible regret that Love Police and Billions Australia bring the bad news that THE BLACK KEYS will not be heading to Australia and New Zealand for their shows scheduled to begin in Wellington on Thursday. The band will also not be performing at any Big Day Out festivals throughout both countries.

yeah, because there wouldnt be a fan outcry if they all came out, sat down, and played quietly and gently without exerting much energy, and played a substandard show, and finished it early.

also, its funny how noone seems to think it may be a cover for a different kind of problem? im not saying it is, but if i had a reason to stop touring that i would rather keep private, exhaustion seems a pretty good go-to reason...

if youve seen the Fumes (who shit on the Black Keys anyway) you would know that a guy can sit down and still play searing rocking blues guitar and fire up the crowd aplenty

they aren't a visual band as such so why would it make any difference if he sat and played?

also they should have known they had a heavy schedule welll before accepting the Big Day Out and should have just said no, they come to australia enough anyway

Totally agree, for all we know this was a fallout between band management and BDO, they might have asked for more money and been refused etc etc,

I always find these excuses hilarious, so many gigs are cancelled each year for "Tour Scheduling Issues" and other piss weak reasons, we never get the true story.

you have correctly suspected that i don't know how hard it is being in an international touring band.

i can only make an educated guess that, regardless of the positives of being an international touring band, it would be draining at times. exhausting, if you will.

i'm just saying, some people have bigger problems.

and yes, i also think it could be a cover up. i don't get why 'exhaustion' could sound better than whatever the actual reason is.

there might actually be a tiny grain of truth to this though - just had a look at their tour schedule for 2010 ( from April last year anyway).

They played 106 shows in 9 months all over the USA and Europe (back and forth a few times), I reckon I'd be pretty over it by then.

Its obviously a very different kind of job to a 9-5, but still 270 days of constant work (or travelling to work) without a weekend is a lot to ask of anyone.

I agree that they shouldn't have booked the gigs at the end of such a massive tour if they weren't up to it, but then again they might not have toured this much ever before and so may not have known what they were in for.

they have decided to keep a few shows in the us and europe. they have hand picked what they want to do. the grammy's are on next month and they have some decent nom's. let's see if they are playing the ceremony that night or win a few. there will be no exhaustion then. you watch them get up and rock out with ke$ha and katy perry. and many bands have pulled out to 'family illness', i think they have rescheduled shows due to that before so i don't think bands are afraid to use it as a reason. but you're right, it could be a raft of more complicated personal/family reasons that could have affected them coming to the otherside of the world in 3 days for 3 weeks.

disappointed they didn't try and reschedule though. bands that are deeply regretful hold their bookings and come back months later. the truth is, they cancelled and more than likely will come back, play a larger venue, and charge more for the tickets. they've copped a lot of stick in the us for selling their songs for marketing purposes in commercials so these guys are either in it purely for money or they are being badly managed. my guess is they are making a killing in the us right now and are riding high on popularity and they are happy to cancel this tour knowing they can come back later on and make more money. call me cynical but that's how i feel about it. i probably should give them the benefit of the doubt though.

I'm sure they'll be back before too long. Whilst I'm pissed they're not coming as I had tickets to BDO and their sideshow, I'll happily see them next time they tour.

instead, it seems like all the fans are the ones chewing them out. im baffled...

certainly not calling them soft or chewing them out. but they have also been around for awhile, they didn't come down in the last shower, they weren't born yesterday etc etc. surely a bit of foresight when scheduling tours is not too much to ask before taking money off people? i don't blame them, that 2010 schedule was hectic.

obviously it's just disappointing, but they'll be here again soon enough. they are still fucking mad and i will continue to love them.

Maybe it was just the lack of notice causing frustration. Which I guess couldn't be helped. Maybe also that the statement of exhaustion coming from Management just seemed too nonchalant. I know with bands that I love/loved, when something was cancelled their was a decent explanation or at least an attempt to reschedule. Their statement just seems a bit cold I guess. I'll get over it and see them next time as well : )

I don't think the Keys sideshows were official BDO sideshows either and they had a different promotional company looking after it. I know BDO didn't run their shows in their ads? Pretty sure anyway. I could be wrong. I would imagine that would have allowed for a reschedule?? I guess there are lots of legal ins/outs so cancellation is the only way to deal with things sometimes.

Could also have something to do with the fact their Myspace site has them down for playing the 'Opera House in Wellington, Australia'. Dan was mightily pissed off when he found out at the Airport that he was actually jumping a plane to Wellington, New Zealand and they turned around and went home.

it's bad enough that international artists don't do proper national tours here (just playing sydney & melbourne), but to pull out the week of the start of the festival is just pathetic.. why start a band in the first place if you can't even do a world tour properly? this is the easiest way to lose or alienate your fans. or potential ones...
and you can't blame the promoter's for replacing them with paul dempsey. what are they supposed to do with less than a weeks notice??
