Red Hot Chili Peppers andStrokes for Splendour 2011?

Is it ever too early to start thinking about the lineup for Splendour? The festival is over eight months away, but we’re already excited about heading back to Woodfordia and the wheels of the rumour mill have already started spinning.

The lineup of Japan’s Summer Sonic Festival has historically been a good indicator of bands planning to play at Splendour. In 2009 bands including The Flaming Lips and The Specials both festivals, while 2010 saw over ten acts including Pixies, Jonsi, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Passion Pit, Surfer Blood, Two Door Cinema Club, The Drums, Richard Ashcroft and Band of Horses jumping on flights from Japan to Woodfordia.

Summer Sonic usually announces its lineup in March, but the organisers are clearly too excited to keep their top acts under wraps and have already confirmed that the festival will be headlined by Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Strokes in 2011, which hopefully means that a Splendour visit is on the cards.

Although the Strokes headlined at Splendour in 2010 a return visit would be warmly welcomed and, unlike their 2010 setlist, their performance would be likely to feature plenty of new material. Both the Strokes and the Chilly Willys are expected to release new studio albums in time for the festival shows – their first albums since 2006.

The dates for the 2011 edition of Splendour have yet to be announced, however the 2010 festival was held from Friday 30th July to Sunday 1st August and it is likely that the festival will again be held the week before the Japanese festival. Summer Sonic 2011 will be held on the weekend of August 13-14 in Tokyo and Osaka.
