Seabellies attacked inMelbourne

Novocastrian indie kids The Seabellies have had a dampener put on their recent visit to Melbourne, with the band reportedly attacked by a local gang on Saturday night.

As evidenced in photos posted on the band’s Facebook yesterday, the six-piece were walking along Brunswick Street in Melbourne when they were bashed with belts and sticks. Mess + Noise reports that “The attack left guitarist/bassist Eddie Garven with stitches to his forehead and multi-instrumentalist Steph Setz and others with bruises.”

The morning after the attack the band wrote on their Facebook: “We are a little sore and sorry this morning. We still had the best time, regardless. We love you [Melbourne], it ain’t your fault. But to all the cowardly gangs everywhere: choosing small groups of innocent people to ambush, outnumber and hit with sticks & belts for sport …. you are disgusting gutless filth.”

As for violence in Melbourne and the need for more law and order - that's total rubbish.

There has actually been a 14 per cent drop in CBD assaults over the past 12 months and the stats from Australian Institute of Criminology indicate that spikes in the rate of violent assault in the past decade are pretty much in line with the rate of population growth.

Though if you're worried about heading out at night I guess you're welcome to stay at home while reading the Scum and listening to the fear mongering 3AW.

There has actually been a 14 per cent drop in CBD assaults over the past 12 months and the stats from Australian Institute of Criminology indicate that spikes in the rate of violent assault in the past decade are pretty much in line with the rate of population growth.

Though if you're worried about heading out at night I guess you're welcome to stay at home while reading the Scum and listening to the fear mongering 3AW.

Thats pretty sweet, we get the same scare mongering in Sydney as well, pisses me off personally because im pretty damn gullable at times. Though Ive gotta admit I was a massive fan of that facial recognition software push for clubs and pubs that seems to have died out...

wo wo wo, settle down dude. I just meant for me personally as a skinny, and short white lad who dresses a bit odd, it's not always the safest option for me to patrol the streets. it doesn't prevent me from going out, I'm just cautious of where I go.

Also remember, unless you're Corey Worthington doing nothing isn't news. So you "always" hear about people getting knifed on trains because thousands of people not getting knifed on the train isn't news.

i live but a 3 minute walk from where this happened...

there are a bunch of council flats just across the road, and I usually stumble past them fairly drunk most saturday nights.

I've also travelled all over South America and Europe, and in comparison, Melbourne is a delight.

this seems out of the ordinary for this particular area... but I haven't been living down here for that long so I'm not really aware of the danger spots.

it's called the availability heuristic.

it's like how everyone thinks they're more likely to be in a plane crash than a car crash because it's the information that's available to you. you hear a lot about plane crashes, therefore you think they're more likely to happen.

crime has actually gone down in recent years (I think) but because they report it so much, it feels like it's happening all the time

I've seen 5 assaults over the past few months on public transport at night. Thankfully, police intervened, but it's a serious issue, and I refuse to catch the train at night if I am alone.

agreed and agreed.

the council flats are housing commissions, i go to uni about 300m from them. at night i've seen more "gangs" doing pub crawls than violent gangs.

fitzroy and carlton are hipster areas, not particularly dangerous areas.
