Eddie Vedder solo tour

For the past week hardcore Pearl Jam fans have been trying to solve a riddle posted on the band’s official website filled with cryptic allusions to The Wizard of Oz and the suggestion that “One man stands alone”. Many punters suggested that perhaps one man from the band was set to announce an Australian tour… turns out they were right.

The dates for Eddie Vedder’s first ever Australian solo tour have been revealed with the Pearl Jam frontman playing theatre shows across the country; though sadly there are not dates for fans in Western Australia
.
Vedder will be supported by the US-based folk-pop duo Evil J & Saint Cecilia – featuring Australia’s own Eliza Jane Barnes and Ceci Herbert – at all shows.

Eddie Vedder solo tour dates:

Thursday 10th March – QPAC Concert Hall, Brisbane
Saturday 12th March – QPAC Concert Hall, Brisbane
Tuesday 15th March – Royal Theatre, Canberra
Wednesday 16th March – Civic Theatre, Newcastle
Friday 18th March – State Theatre, Sydney
Saturday 19th March – State Theatre, Sydney

i was finally able to get around to putting my little review together. i am not going for music journo of the year here, but i would like to share my night with everyone, so here goes... :D

WOW. there is something to be said about the feeling you get while being in the presence of someone like eddie vedder. i am still buzzing from being in such close proximity of someone i consider to be the most amazing vocalist and songwriter i have ever had the pleasure of listening to. his voice has that deep, heavy, yet sweet smooth sound that just washes over you... i have been in love since the very first listen all those years ago.

i'm not going to lie, i cried on saturday night. five times in fact. feel free to go ahead and think i'm an idiot, but i am not ashamed! i laughed too, a lot. during the show, eddie joked with the crowd, responded to people who called things out, and was happy to dabble in a bit of banter with the audience. he stuffed up the start of a couple of songs, and i'm almost positive he got some words mixed up at one stage, but it was ok. that kind of honesty is what makes him stand out as far as i am concerned. there doesn't seem to be any of that 'i'm a perfect rockstar, look how great i am' attitude about him. he was just a guy, sitting on stage with his instruments, there to have a good time. in fact the first thing he said when he came out on stage was "i've got a good feeling about this" and he was right. (enter my first cry)

he treated us to a few PJ songs to get things going. 'sometimes', 'just breath' (insert second cry) and 'man of the hour' were just a few of the little gems he dished out, before he got out his ukelele 'duke the uke' and gave us a preview of a new solo venture, which from what i gathered is going to be an entirely ukelele based album. next he said it was "time to go into the wild", with songs like 'guaranteed' and 'rise', it was another highlight for me (ok, so the whole night was a highlight, but you know what i mean). his cover of 'you've got to hide your love away' was fantastic, which the crowd joined in for with much enthusiasm. 'elderly woman' got a very well deserved standing ovation - it's my favourite song of all time, not just from PJ but of every song i've ever heard. (yep, you guessed it - insert third cry here)

after a short break, eliza jane barnes joined the stage and they did a couple of covers together. the combination of her sweet voice and his gravely one was like a match made in heaven. another favourite of mine 'off he goes' followed, (cry number four crept it's way out here) and i was more than happy sing along to 'betterman' and 'unthought known'.

sadly though, the night did have to come to an end, and what better way to do it than to have evil j and saint cecilia join in as back-up for 'hard sun'. eddie really rocked out for this one, he was standing up and rockin like he does with PJ. he also thought it would be fun to get a few people from the audience up on stage with him. i was so jealous, especially when one of the women who got up was one that had been sitting in front of me when i was way up in the back row before i got moved closer to the front... i actually saw her outside at the end of the night and asked her how she managed to get up there. like me, she was lucky enough to be moved from the balcony, but that lucky bitch (and i say that in a friendly manner) got to move to the front row. THE FRONT ROW! that could have been me! alas, it was not.

the show ended with yet another standing ovation, a goodbye wave from eddie, and a room full of 1500 or so very happy, musically full-filled hearts. (insert final cry of the night).

i have been to many many concerts in my life, and have seen some pretty big bands/musicians, but i can honestly say, this could quite possibly be the best one ever. the intimacy of such a small venue, the fact that i was fortunate enough to be moved closer to the stage, it all added up to one of the best experiences i've ever had on a musical level. i had to keep reminding myself that i was there and it wasn't just a dream.

if i had to give the night/performance a rating out of 10, i'd give it a 20.
