Parkway Drive wins first ARIAfor Hard Rock/Heavy Metal

At a rain sodden event in Sydney’s Royal Botanical Gardens last night, featuring performances from John Butler and Dan Sultan, the winners in the first three ARIA Awards genre categories were announced.

Byron Bay’s Parkway Drive won the inaugural award in the brand new category of ‘Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album’ with their third album Deep Blue.

World music supergroup Djan Djan – Mamadou Diabate, Bobby Singh and Jeff Lang – took home the ARIA Award in the category of ‘Best World Music Album’ for their self-titled album.

And the award for ‘Best Music DVD’ was handed to the producers of the Sound Relief DVD.

The remaining thirteen ARIA Award “genre” categories will be presented at the iTunes Live: ARIA Awards Concert Series throughout the week leading up to the awards night on Sunday at the Sydney Opera House. Tonight the awards for ‘Best Blues & Roots Album’, ‘Best Children’s Album’ and ‘Best Original Soundtrack/Cast/Show’ will be presented alongside performances from Washington and Boy & Bear.

In other ARIA awards news it has been confirmed that Powderfinger will make their final live appearance on Australian television during the Awards ceremony.
