Australia’s ‘Crazy Uncle’, Independent MP Bob Katter, has told ABC news online that he is presenting the award for Best Independent Release at the 2010 ARIA Awards – or as Bob put it: “They have all the mainstream people and then they have the prize for the independents and I’ll be giving that one out.”

The controversial Independent, whose interests include Akubra hats and quoting Joe Bjelke-Peterson, will present the award to one of the five nominees which include, Art Vs Science, Dan Sultan, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, John Butler Trio and Sia.

Katter openly admitted he wasn’t familiar with the nominated acts and named Country & Western artists Lee Kernaghan and Slim Dusty as his favourite Australian artists.

The MP also went on to somewhat inexplicably admit to being part of a group of protesters who threw eggs at The Beatles when they visited Australia in 1964: “I recall vividly being asked. I was sitting at my desk attempting, or making out that I was studying. The boys came in and they said, ‘let’s go, we’re going to egg The Beatles. And I said, ‘well who are The Beatles?”

Perhaps he’ll use the opportunity to elaborate on his same sex marriage and global warming polices?
