Foals Laneway sideshows

UK indie wonders the Foals are so damn hot right now that they are returning to Australia to play St Jerome’s Laneway Festival less than twelve months since they were last on our shores.

Yannis and co wowed fans at Splendour In The Grass this year, treating a super-sized audience in the Mix Up tent to “an hour of euphoric, atmospheric indie tunes.” Their sets at next year’s Laneway are sure to be all the more impressive, but if you missed out on tickets to the sold out Melbourne and Sydney legs then you needn’t fear, because the Foals have just announced a sideshow in both cities as well.

Foals will be playing these Laneway sideshows supported by Last Dinosaurs:

Wednesday 9th February – The Enmore, Sydney
Thursday 10th February – Palace Theatre, Melbourne

Tickets on sale Friday 29th October.

enmore will sell out in no time due to the large underage fanbase they have as well as the overage crowd, will try to make both dates but seriously who picked last dinosaurs as support, foals are energetic as fuck live and last dinosaurs just make you want to take a snooze.

i was amazed at the crowd Foals were able to pull despite the acts they were put against ie Deerhunter and Holy Fuck.

can anyone tell me what the crowd was like for the other two cos it was pretty packed in for Foals.

berlinchair101

berlinchair101 said on the 7th Feb, 2011

Holy Fuck weren't packed but they pulled a descent sized crowd for the small stage. Plenty of room to dance though.

Are you really that suprised? Foals were one of the biggest bands on the bill and definatly the most mainstream band in that timeslot.

Braveheart81

Braveheart81 said on the 7th Feb, 2011

I watched Deerhunter's first song before leaving for Foals.

The crowd wasn't particularly large and Deerhunter certainly did nothing in their first song to make me want to stay. Branford Cox isn't exactly the most charismatic frontman.

yeah i agree with you there. i just thought out of all the slots that was the most competitive one. and the contrast to the headlining performance by cut copy was incredible. i know cut copy are aussie n all but Foals should've headlined or at least been given the chance to play for an hour. foals hit the stage at 7-40 and it was nearly 9-30 before cut copy came on. so i was spewing that Foals didn't play for longer.

berlinchair101

berlinchair101 said on the 7th Feb, 2011

My friend who saw Yeasayer thinks they had the biggest crowd all day.

Can anyone confirm?

HalfCentaur

HalfCentaur said on the 7th Feb, 2011

Cut Copy looked massive as we were leaving. As did two door. Yeasayer were brilliant I was at the front so I had no idea how big they were but I reckon prettty large

sarcasm_mister

sarcasm_mister said on the 7th Feb, 2011

that might have something to do with cut copy starting their set half an hour late therefore finishing 30mins after everyone else. which meant (im assuming this cos i left before 10) cut copy were the only ones still playing at 10.

Thought Foals were pretty average tbh.

There were some great moments but the guitars were really low in the mix and Yannis couldn't keep up with songs like Cassius, as well as singing and playing out of time in other songs. The rest of the band were super tight though.

yeh, the sound was shit at the beginning, you could barely hear the guitars at all. it got much better throughout though.

jack, the drummer, is fucking insanely good. wow.

i thought they were still awesome though. yannis did seem a bit messy, but those live jams are amazing. i.e. i agree rest of the band were super tight.

i wish it wasn't over!

feelingsinister said on the 9th Feb, 2011

That drummer is the best thing about Foals. What a legend!

Decent show, esp towards the end. It was pretty much on par with when I saw them at Manning, only on a bigger scale (and the crowd were a lot more energetic).

Holy Fuck totally kicked their arses though. They should have headlined! ;)

spitchen

spitchen said on the 9th Feb, 2011

Agreed.

Also agree with the commment that it was similar to the Manning Bar show but bigger. The kids totally loved Foals with the crowd going off most of the time.

My only gripe with Foals live is that whilst they play really clinically well, especially the rhythm section, they do lack a bit of soul and personality at times.

Holy Fuck were great. Love their sound and energy, although they were a little dwarfed by the Enmore. Apparently they thought they were playing a much smaller venue and were gobsmacked when they were told it was a 2000+ capacity venue.

feelingsinister

feelingsinister said on the 10th Feb, 2011

Agree with you there Spitchen. It wasn't until Yannis started to go nuts on the drum and climb around etc that it got really interesting. Then again he pretty much did the same thing last year.

I'm pretty impressed that Holy Fuck got such a huge turnout though. Did people go with the intention of seeing them or was the crowd incidental? I felt like I was the only person dancing.

sarcasm_mister

sarcasm_mister said on the 10th Feb, 2011

well going by the set times above. holy fuck came on at 9 which is when the headline act usually come on at the enmore. so that might explain the solid turn out for them.

triple j recorded the foals set.

berlinchair101

berlinchair101 said on the 10th Feb, 2011

Holy Fuck were a lot better at Laneway purely because of the vibe. Everyone in the crowd was losing their shit it was great.

Last night, understandably, the crowd was far more reserved, either because they didn't know who they were or it wasn't what they were there for.

ya, me too. although im not sure whether it was mine or other people's sweat that drenched my shirt.

i was surprised that people managed to get on stage and dance around a bit without being dragged off. i was even more surprised by the guy that jumped on and decided to randomly stage dive.

also i thought two steps twice was a great song to finish off with. even though it seemed to be a bit more violent for me, as i got hit in the head a few times by people in mosh for that last song.

shazie said on the 10th Feb, 2011

That was the most boiling I've ever been standing still at a concert, but Foals still made made sweat a lot more due to all the jumping.

I was so excited to see Holy Fuck as well because of all the clashing at the Bris/Syd laneways and even though the crowd wasn't dancing around, they still played great!

For me, I really enjoyed the gig but there was a bit 'o pushing around at the start (which is probably because it was the start of the show and people were just waiting to jump around). I thought the crowd was better for Manning though because it was a more intimate crowd and they jumped a lot (with less of the pushing ;) ). The vocals were a little hard to hear at times and I think Sydney Laneway had the best sound but I'd rank the Foals shows I've seen in this order:

1. Manning bar
2. Enmore (really glad they played what remains and 2 trees finally!)
3. Syd laneway (best performance of Spanish Sahara)
4. Bris laneway (syd crowds are much more lively than brisbane ones so that's why this is here, still a great performance though)

Foals are just always a really fun band

perfect gig for me. every song i wanted was played, mosh pit was crazy, hummer in the encore.

and despite being injured yannis was still brilliant. fighting off the security guard at the end was great. then when he finally got up there crowd went crazy. fantastic moment.
