Playground Weekender 2011lineup

Playground Weekender fans rave about the festival’s unique vibe and musical offerings. As FasterLouder’s reviewer put it earlier this year : “The lakeside extravaganza is so laidback, so full to the brim with amazing entertainment and so utterly carefree that it’s pretty easy to forget that you’re even at a music festival at all.”

The festival, with the most laidback of vibes, returns to Del Rio Resort at Wisemans Ferry this summer with attractions including an outdoor cinema, the Club Tropicana pool and Australia’s largest fancy dress party. Oh yeah, and a troop of eclectic musical delights for fans of shimmering summery sounds.

The previously announced double hit of funk and soul from 12-piece Jungle Boogie legends Kool and the Gang and veteran sunshine lover Roy Ayers is joined by Manchester’s indie veterans Doves, hip-hop heros De La Soul, recent Splendour guest Kate Nash and the highly anticipated return of electronic innovators Four Tet and Caribou.

Add Norman Jay MBE, LTJ Bukem and a local contingent led by Hungry Kids Of Hungary, Canyons and Danimals to the mix and there’s more than enough reasons to get dressed up in all your fancy finery.

Despite all that goodness filling the bill, the promoters tell us that the headline artist and many more of the acts for the 2011 festival are yet to be announced.

Okay, poor example - but any big festival in the country announcing their line-up and NOT announcing their headliner is just plain weird.

Hasn't sold out in the past couple of years, but has gotten increasingly close. I'd imagine you'd want to save a few dollars by getting the frist release tickets though. Final release are a good bit more expensive.

Laneway is the average one, its just all generic hipster shit. At least PGW has a bit of variety to it with the types of acts its getting.

SlowerQuieter

SlowerQuieter said on the 16th Oct, 2010

Nah Deerhunter and Foals would both be great to see, Two Door Cinema Club and Holy F#@k would be good too. They're virtually all completely different bands. Beach House and Bear In Heaven are supposed to be good live acts as well.

daveyac8881

daveyac8881 said on the 16th Oct, 2010

Agree. Although there's nothing too wrong with generic hipster shit, KOOL & THE GANG. Case Closed.

Copernicus

Copernicus said on the 16th Oct, 2010

Nah this lineup's definitely better than Laneway's. Even though I ily Deerhunter, Beach House, Ariel Pink etc. the diversity on PGW would make it a great festival.

and besides, the headliner is going to make you retract your statement.

The Great Monkey War

The Great Monkey War said on the 16th Oct, 2010

Depends what you like I guess.

If Laneway had replaced Yeasayer and TDCC with Caribou and Four Tet it could have been too epic for words.

I mean, Yeasayer and TDCC were just here. And while I do like them, they're disposable indieshit compared to Caribou/Four Tet.

I don't even like Yeasayer, and I'm a huge fan of Caribou and Four Tet - Swim is my number 1 album of 2010 if you need any proof.

But I'm just saying that for me, Foals and Deerhunter are very very hard to beat, and Holy F#@k would be an epic show. When I go to a festival I'm not necessarily after diversity, just bands that I would really love to see live (which those 3 are).

For me those two festivals were basically Doves, Caribou and Four Tet vs Foals, Deerhunter and Holy F#@k. I was drawn to the latter but I can understand why people would prefer the former.

Jose Cuervo

Jose Cuervo said on the 16th Oct, 2010

There is really no point trying to argue this cause it'll go around in circles all day, let's all just agree that pgw is better because it's the 2nd best festival experience you can get. (subsonic is #1 by a looooong fucking way)
