The sound at the Inner Sanctum stage was awful. Les Savy Fav were still awesome, but unless you already know the lyrics to the songs, you won't know what they're singing. They were the highlight of the day.

Local Natives were good.
Beach House seemed tight, but I wasn't a huge fan of 'Teen Dream'.
Warpaint were OK.
TDCC had the biggest reaction from the crowd. The spraying water from the sides (whether intentional or just some people mucking up) was amazing, Melbourne are lucky to be getting some rain and not the unrelenting heat we had.
Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti...only saw a couple of songs, seemed alright, I'm not too familiar with their material, though.
Yeasayer...watched the first three songs before bailing to Les Savy Fav...in short, they sucked...everyone I spoke to said the whole set was shite.
Foals seemed a little off, to be honest. Luckily it's Foals, so an off performance is still something worth seeing.
Cut Copy...the new songs still bore me, they were good, though.

you can't really expect much from a tin shed for sound.

I was working at the bar at the carpark stage and took a half hour break during yeasayer and I agree, they were friggin boring compared to when I saw them in Belgium.

I finished working at 9.15 so I watched Gotye. Farken so goooood! What a performer. Such great music and such an awesome stage show. Even when faced with technical issues he managed to turn lemons into sweet lemonade.
Then I caught a bit of Cut Copy but only a few songs because I'll probably see them at PGW. They were pretty good, but yeah, the new songs will make you yawn.

Headinf off to the Sydney laneway today but here's how my day went for the Brisbane Laneway:

- Stornoway: Nice relaxing start to the hot day and they played well, even if the lead singer seemed a little nervous talking inbetween songs

- Menomena: Great energetic set from them, didn't know what else to say apart from that. Thumbs up.

- Bear in Heaven: Was a lot of fun, especially standing behind the singer of Les Savy Fav :P

- Warpaint: Was hard to hear what they were singing but they still put on a fantastic performance. They were all getting into what they were playing and the instrumentation was the highlight. Great set.

- Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti: Was the only realy disappointment for the day. The lead singer had his vocals up at a screeching level, forgot the words to one of his own songs, kept forgetting what song was next and sang so awful. I'm hoping that it was an off day for the lead singer because he brought everyone down. Left after about 4 - 5 songs to catch the last 2 songs of blonde redhead and enjoyed them much more.

- Les Savy Fav: I had to choose between them and Deerhunter, and I'm so so glad I chose to see them . Favourite performance of the day and some of the most fun I've had at a festival (definately going to their sideshow). Anyone else there (or anyone who's seen them before) knows just how fun their shows are.

- Foals: The band I wanted to see the most (saw them at Manning last year and absolutely loved them, and planning to see them again today and their sydney sideshow). For some reason, it seemed like the sound for the main stage was a bit quiet. Anyone there know why? But onto the actual set. Even though the sound was quiet, they still put on a great set, mostly Total Life Forever content with a couple of Antidotes songs thrown in there. What I have to comment on though, is the crowd. I know people always say to me "but it's the band that you should worry about for a good show, not the crowd" but for me it makes a big difference to how enjoyable a show can be (and I'm sure most of you feel the same way). I don't know if it was the heat and nearing the end of a long day, the fact that it's a festival set and so there weren't too many big fans there, or a mixture of all, but the crowd was SO lifeless. I rank the Manning Bar show as one of my favourite crowds because they would jump and dance along to practically every song for the entire length. The crowd here maybe moved an inch for 10 seconds for a couple of songs but just stood there lifeless the entire time (granted not all of their songs you can jump to, but I'm focussing mainly on the ones you can). I'm hoping the Sydney crowd will be more energetic today, but I guess if I'm looking for a crowd like Manning again I'll probably have to wait for the Enmore sideshow. Still needed to vent at the boring crowd though.

Cut Copy - They had the same problem with the quiet sound unfortunately, and the lead singer's guitar seemed to have problems all throughout the set (luckily he didn't need it too often). Felt bad for them with all the sound issues they had, what with it being the release day of their new album (even though it did leak a couple weeks ago) but it was a hard set for them because they played a lot of new material without having the album out for a good amount of time so that the crowd would know the songs (and when are they going to actually play one of their own shows? It's been years). The older songs didn't seem to get too much of a reaction on the whole and I think (this is reflecting on the Parklife Sydney show as well) Australia seems to have forgotten about them while the rest of the world is enjoying them. Enjoyed wacthing them but the performance was a bit off (especially playing their longest song to date to a crowd that didn't know it doesn't help :P).

Overall, I had a fantastic day and loved basically every performance but it was just one or two things at the very end of the day that bothered me. I did catch about 3 or so songs from TDCC while I was having some food (and they sounded nice) but own't fully comment on them until I've seen their full set today. I'm looking forward to the day ahead and the only hope I have is that the sydney crowd for Foals is more lively :)

i was quite close for foals about 5 people from the front, and i thought the crowd was great. not too rough, just people singing and dancing, i think their performance last night cements them as one of the best live acts i've ever seen. i wonder if i was anywhere near you?

yeasayer were surprising, i wasn't expecting them to be that good, but they're a solid live act, and they had a great setlist.

the holidays we're a nice start to the day, definitely my favourite aussie act.

TDCC we're good, all the twats came out for them though, all their songs sound the same, but its a good sound lol.

beach house + jenny and johnny were fucking rubbish.

oh and local natives we're great i wish i would of seen their whole set, but i fucked off to go see TDCC who were late anyway.

the venue was most impressive, as was the weather.

best festival i've been too.

I had an undercut for a few months when I was in year 5/6. All the cool kids in our primary school class were getting it done.

I had a good time at Laneway. Only got there at 5pm as I'd been visiting my best friends' newborn baby in hospital.

Watched five minutes of Warpaint which was good because they played Undertow which is the only song of theirs I know. They were OK, but I didn't find them at all exciting.

Saw most of TDCC's set. The crowd was quite large and were pretty in to them. The singles were met with big reactions from the crowd. Every other song sounded pretty similar. I particularly liked the song that was a bit faster than the song that sounded like the song they played before the catchy indie pop/rock one.

Les Savy Fav were fucking awesome. Tim Harrington was in the crowd more than he was on the stage. He also had a little sojourn across some shade cloth. Jamezwm took a little video which I am going to hijack for this thread.

Foals put on a terrific set. The crowd loved it and people were dancing most of the way back from what I could see. I was next to the sound desk and the crowd was certainly very enthusiastic around me. Setlist included Blue Blood, Olympic Airlines, Total Life Forever, Cassius, Miami, Spanish Sahara, The French Open and a couple of others.

Gotye was really good although a couple of the new songs weren't particularly exciting. Good way to finish the night. Learnalilgivinanlovin got the crowd dancing up a storm and was a great way to end the night.

As we were walking out of the entrance, a guy sprinted towards the carpark being chased by half a dozen cops. He didn't make it particularly far before he was crash tackled and then pinned down by all the cops. Wasn't the most pleasant thing I've ever seen. My car was parked about 3m away from where he was being pinned down so we couldn't help but hang around for a minute. There were a few other punters who were a bit upset by the somewhat heavy handed treatment.

Anyway, was a really enjoyable night. Judging by the lineups Laneway keeps producing, chances are I'll be back next year.

There were a few celebrity sitings on the day. Saw Lindsay McDougall, CureMe, and Jamezwm. Also saw 1 or 2 (thousand) hipsters.

My week last week

Foals in Byron Bay:
So glad I saw them this way, it beats the festival environment everyday of the year. Yannis ruled the stage. I came out, ripped torn setlist in hand, completely 100% soaked in sweat, voice hoarse, feet on fire. Terrific band, everyone here has to see them at a club gig at least once. Went to their afterparty and met all the boys, yannis was cutting and snorting something on Edwin's dj decks, jack and walter were just the loveliest guys, had a good little chat to jimmy as well. Brilliant night. Last Dinosaurs werent bad either.

Two Door in Byron:
Not quite the atmosphere of foals, however still a very enjoyable show.Parades were excellent beforehand playing to a crowd who could not give two shits. Their bassist came out to us afterwards and thanked us as we seemed the only ones enjoying the show and singing along. I told him we had been looking forward to seeing them for months and that the crowd didnt know what they were missing. I brought foreign tapes and a shirt from them too they said 'YES! we can eat tonight!' Poor buggers

Two door plyed very well extremeley tight overall very enjoyable.

Laneway Brisbane:
Stornoway were a highlight. Didnt know how many of their songs I actually knew and was singing along the entire time. Very strong, crisp vocals and his nervous banter with the crowd between songs was adorable. Spoke in small fragments quite quickly and they seemed genuinely appreciative of those that came to see them. Would like to see them tour again

Menomena were of course fantastic, even minus brent. His replacement Peter was an eccentric character and added that little extra entertainment. Again the crowd let the band down, not many faces around me suggested they were a fan of what they were seeing, and most just stood. I danced my little tits off. Danny did a great job singing Brent's songs, whilst drumming.

Caught the last 4 songs of local natives, they were strong but I wasn't really feeling it, even though I was looking forward to them. Sun Hands was the highlight, but definately a band I'd like to see again.

Had a break for a bit and ran into Anand and Chris from yeasayer, had a little chat with them, they were both checking out bear in heaven. Both were really nice although they had a prick of a roadie who kept trying to shoo us away. Chris and anand were both happy to talk and tae a few photos which was nice.

Also ran into Justin and Peter from menomena who were very friendly and we had a good chat about my girlfriend's tan and there show and brent leaving.

Went to see The Antlers, who I was looking forward to dearly. AMAZING to watch. Vocals were outstanding and as a group were very tight. In particular, check out their performance of Sylvia, will give you goosebumps. Unforfunately fucking Blonde Redhead dcided they needed more time to set up so they hauled Antlers off 5 minutes early, leaving the set a song short. Ran into Peter from the band aswell who seemed very humble and glad to talk to some fans.

Stood at Two Door Cinema Club next to a creepy young blonde fella who ept trying to undo his girlfriends bra and kiss her right next to me. She didnt like it, I didnt like it. Stop being a tool. He also kept yelling out 'suck my dick sam' which was fucking annoying. They were aiite, seeing them twice in two days though took the edge off.

Yeasayer were good and had a lot of fun on stage. Played a good chun of older stuff which I loved, although he quipped during the show, ;these guys are too young, they havent even heard of our first album', which is very true but not very fair. They were one of the highlights, as they were at splendour.

Went and saw Deerhunter, didnt really enjoy too much of what I saw, bit too cluttered and noisy. I enjoyed halcyon digest as it was mostly the opposite of cluttered and noisy.

Gotye was very entertaining, despite me not really liking too much of his 'lie drawing blood' LP. He's got a iller voice and brilliant interaction with the crowd (A highlight was his improvised 'Sound Card" "is Fucked" song with the crowd, making light of some terrible technical difficulties.) Didnt like that there was such a heavy reliance on baking tracks and samples but overall was a good show. Hearts a mess was brilliant as was Eyes Wide Open and 'Thankyou for your time?' not sure if thats whatits called. The one with the fake vodafone call in the middle.

Saw 5 minutes of CHK CHK CHK and hated every minute of that 'Mika' looking prancer fuckhead.

As we left cut copy were playing lights and music so we checked that out. Couldnt hear the bass so it sounded a bit rubbish. Lead singer looks like a science teacher.

OVERALL: Laneway was fucking good and I cant wait to go back. One of my favourite festivals Ive been too

Yeah and Stornoway got a nice crowd considering they were first up as well!

I wasn't as close you you but not far back (had to run from les savy fav to get a respectable spot) but I think the quiet sound of the main stage + the people where I was at least didn't make it as good as the show they had in sydney last year (still was a great performance though :) ).

Also, just got back from Sydney Laneway and here is my day! (I tried so hard to make it a completely different day no matter how much I wanted to see a band again so the only band I saw at both shows was Foals):

Rat vs. Possum: Never listened to them before but thought the instrumentation was nice but the lead singers vocals seemed a bit odd for me.

The Antlers: Very short set :( But I thought they managed to translate their songs well into a festival setting (a very hard thing to do considering the style of the new album) and the lead singers vocals were great. They played a new song as well which I enjoyed.

PVT: None of my friends liked them but I like the tron-like style of their songs and all the synth effects they use (i'm not good with technical terms. Probably just loops 'n such?)

Local Natives: Got the crowd going and they made the overcast weather still seem like a hot summer day. I also enjoy bands that harmonise as well ;)

Beach House: Didn't get a good spot so I was stuck around people talking to each other so I didn't quite enjoy the set. Norway is my favourite song and I still managed to block out everyone talking enough to enjoy that though and the other songs I like from teenage dream.

Two Door Cinema Club: The crowd jumped around a lot and they played pretty good, not great, but was probably one of the most "why are you doing this at an indie-pop show?" moments I've had. They brought out a lot of the twats though (as apparently what also happened in Brisbane from oldgregg's comment). I don't know if anyone else was around where I was but A bunch of twats were screaming and trying to start a mosh pit. THEN one drunk/pilled up guy about 1 metre to the left unzipped his pants and started pissing all over the crowd around him (I narrowly escaped that, thank god). Didn't quite enjoy this set even though they played alright :P

Yeasayer: This was such a hard thing to do because I wanted to go see Les Savy Fav again but I haven't seen Yeasayer before and really wanted to see them (seeing Les at their sideshow anyways). I heard mixed things from their performances this week but I'm glad I saw them, they put on a tight performance and the crowd loved them.

Foals: Once again, wanted to see Deerhunter but I'm a sucker for Foals. Also, going on from my previous post about Brisbane, the sound was loud this time and the whole crowd jumped along to both old songs and new. Was the highlight of my day and from the 3 times I've seen them so far it was the best performance of Spanish Sahara I've witnessed (Manning Bar still remains the best show though). I walked away very satisfied from this to...

Gotye: Was very tired by this point but he put on a very fun show and highlight of the set goes to "thanks for your time". The new songs will need some time to grow on me though

Very tired right now and have work in the morning but another great Laneway! Can't wait to see who they'll bring next year.

Also saw that guy pinned by the police, didn't look too pretty :S

My Day at Laneway: A tale of a guy who didn't particularly care about going.

The Holidays - Were enjoyable, although the last time I saw them they weren't all hip the African drums, I thought they were going to bust out a Toto cover, fun stuff.

Violent Soho - Almost as fun as the looks on some unsuspecting hipsters faces when they launched into Son of Sam. They were fun to watch and a nice change from the majority of the festival. You don't notice how sub-par a lot of their songs are live.

Local Natives - Caught the begining and end of their set. I had never heard them and I thought they were great, going to have to pick up their record.

Beach House - Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Two Door Cinema Club - One of the bands I was there to see. Fun, they were really tight and with one album it was hard for them to play anything but the singles so everyone was into it. Most bogan crowd I saw of the day.

Les Savy Fav - A sincere and serious thanks to everyone who recommended me seeing these guys. I only knew 2 songs and I had the best time. They were so tight and spot on and the singer was really entertaining. I was standing under the shade cloth when he was climbing over it. Fantastic band I'm going to buy some of their albums today.

Foals - I saw the first half of their set. I thought they were good but the generally average sound at the car park stage and the wind were making it sound fairly average. I had a bit of a dance and a sing but I'm seeing them Wednesday so my girlfriend and i headed to...

Holy Fuck - I'm not a big dance music fan at all but these guys were so much fun. Dancing my buns off was a great way to beat the freezing wind.

!!! - I didn't care much about the headliners, especially after Cut Copy's horrible Parklife set, so I thought I'd see these guys. I had no idea what they would sound like but I had a great time. They were energetic and really seemed happy to be performing. There was an interesting side show when an excited punter scaled to the roof of the infrastructure and then spent the rest of the set trying to get down.

Other Fun Facts:

- I had a drunken conversation with the doctor about when the new Frenzal album comes out. He was a nice fellow.

- One of the many festival bogans started a fight with my friend, a girl half his size at, Yeasayer. Classy.

- I saw 5 minutes of Gotye. It was too cold to be listening to something that mellow. He seemed to perform well though.

- I was not dressed appropriately for biting winds and rain and am paying for it today.

All in all I had a great day and would go again.
