Flying Lotus, The GaslampKiller and Hudson Mohawke tour

Back in August the news broke that LA beat wizard, and Thom Yorke collaborator, Flying Lotus had Australia in his sights for summer, and now his tour stops have been locked in. The ‘Flying Lotus Live’ show begins its circuit at the Rhythm and Vines Festival in New Zealand, before rolling onto Perth for New Years Eve.

At all dates, the headliner is accompanied by The Gaslamp Killer and Hudson Mohawke, the co-producer of Kele Okereke’s solo debut, making this an all-killer triple-bill for lovers of warped hip hop and dub.

Making the Sydney date extra, extra special the King of the Boogie, DâM-Funk returns to play his killer keytar solos following a sold-out tour in May. A full DâM-Funk national tour announcement is promised soon.

2010 has already been a prodigious year for FlyLo. His album Cosmogramma was hailed as a masterpiece, spawning his new ‘audio visual experience’ that has been taking Europe by storm. His new Pattern+Grid World EP shows off his more playful, beat-focused side, proving once again that he’s a producer at the peak of his powers.

Friday 31st December – Move @ The Bakery, Perth
Sunday 2nd January – Dank Morass @ The Tivoli, Brisbane
Wednesday 5th January – Canberra
Friday 7th January – The Forum, Sydney
Saturday 8th January – The Outfield, Melbourne

Been waiting for this since it was first announced that he’d be in Perth for New Years. Still not sure what this Outifield business is though- struggling to find any other deets. Anyone know anything?

Not sure that it's a live band tour - but his solo tour earlier in the year was fantastic. Solid 2 hr set of g-funk mixed with dancefloor keytar solos.

Maybe it seems high after the bargain that was RBMA a few weeks ago. I will certainly be paying the cash regardless, should be fantastic. Missed Flying Lotus last time and can't wait to see him and Gaslamp in action.

Unfortunately due to council decisions, the outdoor site cannot be utilised till later in the year. So The Outfield has been postponed, this show will take place as the largest Espionage to date.

Guess that LA guest would be Dam Funk... and there goes my mate's plan of coming up for the Sydney gig - although the show does act as a nice lead into the Sydney festival

Well that was pretty effin amazing. Dam-Funk, his keytar and shameless self-aggrandising was great, Mark Pritchard put on a pretty flawless set of dub n stuff but FlyLo showed why he's miles ahead of the rest. Such an exciting, dynamic performance. He had Thundercat on bass (wearing some massive native American headress) and his brother on Drums- gave the songs a far more live and immediate feel. Played heaps off Cosmogramma and Patten+Grid World.

Didn't stay for much of GLK (3.00am is past my bedtime) but he seemed pretty cool too

Dam-Funk were cool at the forum but FlyLo just seemed flat to me. Maybe it was due to working most of the day and being tired as hell or the intense hype or the mix being WAY off but the entire thing just didn't bode well with me.

Left before GLK as I had to catch the last train to my place.

Yeah, but tbh the Forum sound is always shit, i've been to like 6 or so gigs there over the last year or 2 and hte only one i rememeber sounding decent was ToD, everything else just always seems to sound fucked. It's no where near as bad as the big top, but yeah, it aint that great either.

Quit the sooking. Lotus and band sounded great! (Really don't get the anti-Forum complaints everything I've seen there has sounded fine)

Gaslamp killed it (he basically had to be dragged off stage by Lotus and band - "New area shit! New Hudmo! LA!")

Dam Funk was a bit meh (compared to the 2010 tour which was a solid 2 hours of g-funk gold) that Ariel Pink remix might be new and kinda cool, but it's a vibe killer.

It was the same for the Brisbane show. I enjoyed it a lot, but, at times it was as frustrating as a Crystal Castles show.

Still fucking cool, though.

Hermitude was a surprise for me. Played some cool beats and did some impressive things with their equipment.

I'm a bit torn with Gaslamp Killer's set. There was a fair bit of noise-step (whatever it's called). At one stage even he admitted it was barely music. However, he was very entertaining, which rescued him from the what-the-fuck-is-coming-out-of-the-speaker moments.

Admittedly, a year or two ago I probably would have been worshipping the stuff he was playing.
