The A-Z of Paul Kelly

It seems that Christmas has come early for Paul Kelly fans. Following on from yesterday’s announcement that Australia’s Father of Folk will be performing at Hanging Rock with Leonard Cohen in November comes news that, as of next month, Kelly is taking his A to Z shows back on the road again.

The A to Z shows are a series of intimate acoustic performances that see Kelly perform one hundred songs from his back catalogue alphabetically over four consecutive nights. He first road-tested the unique concert format back in 2004 at the Spiegeltent in Melbourne, and their success led to the release of The A To Z Recordings and eventually his memoir How To Make Gravy.

Released only three days ago, Kelly’s memoir is broken up into one hundred alphabetical chapters each containing the lyrics and story behind one of his songs. The small vignettes that make up the memoir are actually an extension of the stories that Paul found himself telling on stage, night after night, when first performing his A to Z shows.

The tour, which kicks off in November and extends through to April 2011, sees Kelly stopping everywhere from Melbourne to Alice Springs and includes a run of shows at Ciry Recital hall in Sydney as part of the Sydney Festival.
