Vote for your #1 Big Day Outmoment

This Monday Big Day Out is set to announce its 2011 line-up, and if rumours are to be believed anyone from Blink 182 to Soundgarden could be playing Australia’s biggest summer festival come January.

It has been eighteen years since BDO first got the party started with a Sydney only event headlined by some small three-piece called Nirvana. Since then the festival has grown to almost iconic status both within Australia and internationally, withstanding controversies and many an untamed rockstar.

There has been a swag of defining moments in the festival’s history – some controversial (the 2007 flag ban) and some just downright hilarious (Courtney Love flashing her hoo-haa in 1999).

This year FasterLouder wants to find out what your most memorable Big Day Out moments are, so we are holding a poll to do just that.

Over the next week we want you to send us your most memorable BDO moment. Perhaps you were there when Iggy Pop incited punters to storm the stage in 2006, or perhaps you saw Joe Strummer at his last ever Australian performances at 2000 BDO? There are eighteen years for you to choose from, so get thinking!

We will announce the top 30 moments as voted by you alongside the 2011 Big Day Out line-up next week.

At The Drive In walking off after a couple of songs because people in the crowd didn't want to stand still was pretty funny.

They are listed on the BDO website as the headliner, but possible nonetheless.

I believe Violent Femmes were announced as the headliner (and played that spot) but inbetween the announcement of the show and it actually occuring Nevermind was released and turned Nirvana into superstars.

This got me thinking, I have never really been to a BDO where I have been frothing to see any of the headliners. As a result, I can't really pick a highlight that stands out for me.

1999 melbourne lilly pad and the public sex display and other horrible sex acts at the same time as the manson set.

1993 and an angry franti at his best with disposible heroes of hiphoprisy and the other dude with the angle grinder.

2000 double strummer set at melbourne bdo (thank you frenzal, the best thing you ever did was cancel!)

The epic game of catch in the rain in the wait for Metallica in 04. All these guys were running around throwing a football from the floor to the top of the grandstand where another group of guys were throwing it back for about 45 minutes.

Awesome reminder of how much fun you can have at the BDO with total strangers.

2007: GC: Muse were incredible - did the best set IMO - my perfect mix of their songs and in a perfect order. Was in the D section, held down by mates and totally soaked by the security guards bearing hoses. I had the best time in 07- so loose.

2010: Sydney: Calvin Harris was a real surprise - the boiler room in Sydney is out of this world. best venue. Loved Dizzee too.

Thats when I first realised that Hallways and Whatever you want were separate songs (I had always previously confused them as the same song) and that as I liked 3 songs from their album, I had to buy it.

So I did, and the distinctly one-sided love affair began...

RATM were way better back in 96 (or whenever it was). That was probably one of the best sets I've seen at a BDO.

That same year, seeing The Prodigy headline the side stage before they really hit the big time was awesome.

Here is my top 10, all from Melbourne

10 - My Morning Jacket 2009 - Awesome set in front of a very small crowd, one of my favourite live bands.
9 - QOTSA 2001 - First time i saw them play. Crowd went nuts for Feel Good Hit of the Summer.
8 - Ramones 1994 - One of only two opportunities i got to see them play. Love them, they were awesome.
7 - Patti Smith 1997 - What can i say, simply a legend.
6 - Joe Strummer 2000 - See Patti Smith.
5 - New Order 2002 - Blue Monday, Temptation and Bizarre Love Triangle back to back was just amazing.
4 - Underworld 1999 - Still the greatest boiler room closing set I've ever seen. Unforgettable.
3 - The Stooges 2006 - Simply amazing set. Band was in such fine form, Iggy was Iggy. Legendary.
2 - Neil Young 2009 - The fourth last name to be crossed off my bucket list. Everything about it was amazing. Best headliner in the history of the festival in my opinion.
1 - RATM 1996 - For those that thought they were good in 2008, this set totally blew that away. The most intense mosh pit i have ever seen anywhere. This is easily in the top 5 sets i have ever seen.

Honourable mentions go to Janes Addiction 2003, Metallica 2004, The White Stripes 2002, The Cult 1995, Nine Inch Nails 2000 and Chemical Brothers 2000.

my best Big Day Out moment was probably at the 2009 BDO and I was having a crappy day, someone had stolen my wallet and so i was hungry and thristy and i was about to leave, but instead a mate told me I should check out a band called the Fantomas. To be honest i had never heard of them but i was a big fan of the Melvins and Faith No More so I decided to go and check them out before i left. All i can say is I'm so fucking happy i did check them out

powderfinger adelaide 2001 - asking for a minute of silence and then dedicating these days to that girl who died in the mosh pit during linkin park, fanning sang that one from heart - whilst the set behind him was a big full moon very surreal , very sad but very memorable

the very last ammonia live show was on the main stage of the perth big day out in january 1999. what an awesome, but very sad moment, singing along to 'drugs' and 'sleepwalking' one last time!! awesome!

I was there side of stage for this. There was a whole bunch of us all arm in arm, some with tears, but all there in the moment. It was a very powerful few minutes.

the year after the chick died in the mosh, grinspoon asked for a minute of noise after they played chemical heart, white ballons and streamers etc going off, it was a mid arvo set.

apparently grinspoon were her fave band.

05 Beastie boys and chemical bros closed main stages in syd. Beastie boys closed with sabotage in band style. truly epic!

Neil Young was great. I enjoyed the BDO more than his side show purely becasue he seemed to enjoy the BDO over his sideshow.

He was annoyed that people were screaming out "Rockin in the Free World" all through his show at the entertainment centre then when he played it he was annoyed that no one was standing up.

Without question: Rage the last time. Snuck up into the lighting deck and saw the apocalypse unleashed. I was in the moshpit for their appearance when I was 15, but nothing compares to being on stilts that are being shaken by a crowd that won't quit.

Ticky McGregor - you must be under 25.

Knate - you must be a legend.

Spintheblackcircle - that was one of the great sets for me too, flew to Perth to see it. Mindblowing.

Also, for me - running into Justine from Elastica in the crowd after seeing them live - love that band.

Soooo many years of awesome memories. Iggy, TZU, Mars Volta, Cold Play doing Yellow before people hated it, Magic Dirt, Hoodoo's, Kings Of Leon in the pig shed at Melbourne before anyone had heard of them, Metallica in the late 90s when the sky was pink, purple, yellow and amazing ... and how many wicked memories got born in the Silent Disco :o)))

sydney:

bdo 2007 - when the killers opened up with 'sam's town', the first time i've ever seen a band i really wanted to see live. my passion for live music started at that moment.

bdo 2008 - "fuck you i won't do what you tell me" - jumping and yelling in time with thousands of other punters.

bdo 2010 - matt bellamy telling the security team to "get these people some fucking water!" before launching into unnatural selection.

I only went to '09 BDO and didn't see Neil Young or TV on the Radio. Black Kids were the highlight so I guess that would be my #1 moment.

Glad Muse didn't play Unnatural Selection when I saw them. So fucking boring.

I've acknowledged on many occasions I was late to the game. BDO '09 was a long time ago in respect to how long music listening and gig attending has actually been a hobby of mine (more than half).

throwing out glowsticks at fast crew. the first time. it looked so awesome. it even stopped the band. they started up again, pointed us some resepta and the set just went bat shit. all the girls and fellas dancing to awesome fast crew with glowsticks, was amazing.
