Soundwave 2011 reveals hugesecond line-up

It might not include Weezer, but the latest round of names joining the 2011 Soundwave Festival tour is suitably spectacular. While some of the acts have been drip-fed by the festival in recent weeks, it’s still a heavyweight list of additions.

At the top of the list, and slipping into the slot of ‘third headliner’, is One Day As A Lion, the powerhouse pairing of Rage Against The Machine firebrand Zach De La Rocha and former Mars Volta drummer Jon Theodore.

Also new to the line-up are British veterans Feeder, livewire punks Fucked Up, prog-rockers Coheed & Cambria and a varied cast of hardcore, punk and metal types. It just keeps getting better…

With Gang Of Four,the Melvins and Fucked Up It's looking very likely that I'll attend Soundwave.

But on the other hand,a group who released one twenty minute long EP in 2008 are third headliner? I know the the people who attend Soundwave have a massive boner for RATM but that seems like a fucking stupid idea.

I thought the whole One Day as a Lion thing was decidedly average.

In terms of RATM related things, I'd say it's about half as good as Audioslave which was about half as good as RATM (if that).

I personally think it's part of a deal struck to bring them out, considering they hardly do live shows. The amount of bands bigger than them billed below them is kind of astounding.

Never even heard of One Day As a Lion until this thread. Do they really deserve being third headliners? I think there are bigger bands already on the bill that could fill that spot.

probably means they won't go on stage after 9pm...doesn't mean they have to be in-bed and snoring. I am pretty sure they played til 11pm or so on the last "Somewhere back in time" tour

Most of the end times for their Sonisphere headline sets were 11pm, so I'm not sure where the 9pm thing came out of. Probably sick of all the late finishes?

Todays announcement doesnt excite me (but I was already happy with the lineup).

Never heard of One Day As A Lion, but based on its members im sure it will be worth checking out.

Yeah a little bit- but I think it was somewhat clever. It kept them consistently in music news and kept soundwave "talked about".

Nah, I just think next years lineup just isn't as good as this years. There's quite a few good second tier artists this year, but the headliners I thought were a little underwhelming (especially Iron Maiden).

Whether or not you like Iron Maiden, they are a headline band, fact. And maybe you're underwhelmed by Slayer because they were here recently but they are also a headline band, not to mention Primus & QOTSA.

So as far as Soundwave 11 goes I think they've done pretty well with the big bands with some great depth down the list, better overall than the last one.

Yeah, I don't agree that Iron Maiden aren't a headline band, I just don't like them. QOTSA haven't been good for a few albums now so I'm not really excited to see them just yet.

Slayer & Primus I have no problem with.

It all comes down to personal taste for me - last year the headline acts hit the right spots for me, this year less so. It's still a good lineup, and I'm still pretty excited and have a ticket, I just wish the main headliner was a little more to my liking. Like every festival season you win some, you lose some.

At the end it's your win because you either A) get to see an act on a smaller stage you might not have seen or B) beat the crowd by leaving early (and ultimately beat the crowd to the nearest maccas or other joint with a decent toilet and a well-priced feed)

Between some timer thing on The Getaway Plan's website, taking the 'it's dead' off their myspace and sharing a guitarist with The Amity Affliction who are also on the lineup, I think it's pretty good odds it's Getaway.

I think the line up is great, IM Slayer Qotsa Primus Melvins Millencollin and not that I know their stuff, One day as a lion should be a good act to see. If they are 3 headliner or not I don't give a shit. Last year had me sold on FNM JA and Anthrax, to me that was worth the admission price alone. In my opinion the line up is TOO big, I would prefer less bands and longer sets.

The over-billing of One Day As A Lion doesn't concern me at all. I couldn't care less who plays after who. The only time it matters is when a band has a killer lighting display. For most of the bands playing Soundwave this won't be an issue.

Even as a fan of One Day as a Lion I can't see them translating that well live on a mainstage. They'd sound sick on a smaller stage but oh well, will definitely be seeing them next year. And apparently they'll be playing one of the three Brisbane sideshows also...

It could be to let the "SOLD OUT" buzz die down a little - I've noticed that as soon as a festival sells out, ticket appear on ebay etc for ridiculous amounts, but then as the festival gets closer, the prices come down, til theyre being sold for
I guess that as soon as a festival sells out, there's a rush of people who go, "Holy crap it sold out and I wanted tickets I need to buy them now now now!" and will pay whatever.

Whereas if you delay that rush a little, people might be less willing to just pay whatever the scalper charges.

It's not quite a foolproof method, but it might put a little dint in the scalping system...

I agree with this.

I like that the hope regarding this working as an anti-scalping measure is more related to stopping punters from making stupid purchases than stopping scalpers from selling overpriced tickets.

I am personally stoked with Coheed playing. A little concerned about the clashes that will arise though. I personally loved Monster Magnet last time they were here and would love to see them again but something tells me there will be a lot of bands i will have to draw straws for.
