The Smashing Pumpkins return

Months after first promising an Australian tour Billy Corgan has finally collected his Smashing Pumpkins crew together to book the flights for a visit in October.

Since the Billy last visited us in 2008 to play at the V Festival he has declared that there won’t be any more Smashing Pumpkins albums ; recruited 20-year-old drummer Mike Byrne ; found a new muse in Jessica Simpson ; held open auditions for new bandmates ; and inducted former Veruca Salt and Spinnerette bassist Nicole Fiorentino into the latest incarnation of the Smashing Pumpkins.

The band has also been releasing the 44-song series Teargarden by Kaleidyscope, with tracks being issued free online one at a time.

FasterLouder presents The Smashing Pumpkins tour:
Tuesday 12 October – Riverside Theatre, Perth
Wednesday 13 October – The Theatre, Adelaide
Friday 15 October – Festival Hall, Melbourne
Saturday 16 October – Big Top, Sydney
Sunday 17 October – The Tivoli, Brisbane

Tickets on sale 12 noon Thursday 16th September.

I've never been a massive pumpkins fan but of course love their few mainstream hits. This would be a pretty awesome show at the Tivoli though I can't see tickets being under $80

saw them @ summersonic in japan. they were great at playing the old stuff, but billy put far to much new stuff in the set and the crowd lost interest. the new drummer looks like some high school kid from the central coast.

Would you say it's worth going to see them?

Big Top in Sydney really is a below par venue - the sound is usually terrible.

Shazie - if you've never seen them i think it's worth going, even if it's just Billy and a new band

Damn, just bought tickets to You Am I for that night. Billy is just messing with me now. I did see them at V Festival, and I had something close to a religious experience. Should I not try and recreate ascension?

If you got something positive out of that V Festival set then you are already a long way in front if you ask me. I'd leave it at that.

Bloody great news, always good to see Billy rocking out - even if he can be a bit of a dick.

Billy Corgan always intrigued me, yet I might leave it as that. No point in going to something that will never live up to any expectations (even the lowest of lows)

yes? no? will i go and be blown away, or just see a new age weirdo who doesn't think swine flu is real pracing about with whatever female bassist he likes at the moment?

Agreed, the live performances couldn't come close to replicating their studio sound. Was a real shame as they were one of the iconic bands of my youth.

When you consider some of the recording techniques used by Corgan this is hardly surprising.

The layering of guitar tracks you hear in Siamese Dream can't really be reproduced live.

berlinchair101

berlinchair101 said on the 10th Sep, 2010

soma from siamese dream is meant to have 40 individual guitar tracks, some of them only lasting seconds.

Oh yeah, am well aware. BC would also re-record D'Arcy's and James' bits so what was on stage was nothing like what people heard on CD/cassette/vinyl.

Even with all that in mind, I was still a naive teen expecting my favourite band to change the world'.

I saw them at Vfest and their sideshow. As a huge Smashing Pumpkins fan it was cool but without JC I just don't know if they'll be much chop live.
