Weezer not playing Soundwave2011

Call it a persistent rumour or repeated wishful thinking, but the oft touted story that Weezer will be touring Australia soon has again been quashed yet again… for now anyway.

The whispers that Weezer would be playing at Soundwave 2011 had Ned our Latvian bookie placing the band as short priced favourites to be announced as part of the Soundwave lineup, but Soundwave promoter AJ Maddah dashed that gamble this morning by confirming this morning that the third headliner “is not Weezer…. They’ll be here later in 2011.”

“Later” huh? We’ve heard that before … maybe Weezer really does hate Australia

God damn. Though at least there won't be a clash with Maiden.

In other news, Hurley is surprisingly listenable.

there is still a second announcement for soundwave, bands as big as placebo got onto the second announcement last year.

AJ has already said they're not playing the fest and they're not third headliner, and he's bringing them out later in 2011.
You can also expect a My Chemical Romance tour after Soundwave according to his twitter.

i received this email from karl in the weezer camp,,,
andrew i feel your pain. ive wanted to return there since we last left! now, there is definitely no hating on australia from rivers or anyone, but apparently its been really tricky to work out a deal at the professional level, between whoever puts on shows in australia and the bands management and agents. when a deal is worked out, the band will finally be on their way... i look forward to that day....

I calls bullsh!t.

With all the bands that hit our shores year in, year out, one must question how "tricky" these deals actually are.

i wrote to various promoters cause i think its total bullshit that no promoters would want them to tour.
i received an email back from frontier saying pretty much the same thing i got back from karl.....
i said the same as you, bands that are not even established world wide etc can get tours and you cant get weezer here?
they just said you have to understand the time and effort and venues availability.

Braveheart81

Braveheart81 said on the 14th Sep, 2010

I'd say that a Weezer tour now would require a lot of hype to sell out a big venue.

There would be a lot of perceived risk for a promoter because the cost of bringing Weezer out would be high, they would require a large venue and you couldn't be sure that they'd sell it out because they are way past their prime.

There's no way you could tour Weezer and get them to play a small venue like The Metro or similar because their payment would be too high for that.

I am sure if Weezer really wanted to tour Australia they could make it happen. Either that or they should hire a new manager.

MorningAfterboy

MorningAfterboy said on the 14th Sep, 2010

Weezer could do somewhere like the Hordern with little trouble. Maybe even the Entertainment Centre at a stretch.

Jose Cuervo

Jose Cuervo said on the 14th Sep, 2010

And we all know how good you are at picking venue sizes for bands

Braveheart81

Braveheart81 said on the 14th Sep, 2010

I would think that a Weezer tour playing venues the size of the Hordern would require quite a lot of marketing and hype to get close to selling out.

Playing the Ent Cent would result in a half empty theatre, an angry band, and an embarrassed and much poorer promoter.

berlinchair101

berlinchair101 said on the 14th Sep, 2010

Really?

I'd believe the Hordern but Entertainment center?

They'd more lilely play the Enmore wouldn't they?

Do that many people really like these guys? Do radio stations outside Triple J play them? If so, do they play anything besides Buddy Holly and Island in the Sun?

weezerman

weezerman said on the 14th Sep, 2010

id say even the enmore theatre

MorningAfterboy

MorningAfterboy said on the 14th Sep, 2010

RE: the SEC - I did say 'at a stretch.'
I was under the impression that a lot of people have been waiting to see these guys for the past half-decade or so. If A Tribe Called Quest can sell out the Hordern, why not Weezer?

Braveheart81

Braveheart81 said on the 14th Sep, 2010

ATCQ only just sold out the Hordern a couple of days before.

I'd say the promoter of that tour was taking a bit of a gamble too.

It also depends a lot on booking fees.

Jose Cuervo

Jose Cuervo said on the 14th Sep, 2010

Wasnt it ATCQ's first tour to australia as well?

MorningAfterboy

MorningAfterboy said on the 14th Sep, 2010

Yeah, true - hopefully Ticketek aren't going to keep up that $20 fee bullshit.

I didn't think I was overselling Weezer - they've got a pretty strong following, and even their crap albums have charted pretty well here.

Spicy McHaggis

Spicy McHaggis said on the 14th Sep, 2010

I don't think they'd have any issue selling out a Hordern ahead of time either to be honest.

berlinchair101

berlinchair101 said on the 14th Sep, 2010

I'd still bet on two nights at the Enmore before one show at the Hordern

weezerman

weezerman said on the 14th Sep, 2010

i wonder if having neglected to tour here for 14 yrs, if it could play a part in whether or not they sell out too.if people hold grudges.

mooney88

mooney88 said on the 14th Sep, 2010

same. they have had way too many shit albums in the last decade.

MorningAfterboy

MorningAfterboy said on the 14th Sep, 2010

So? Bon Jovi have released about five or six shit albums this decade, and they're doing three nights at the Football Stadium.

tyler07

tyler07 said on the 14th Sep, 2010

Weezer don't have the MILF following that Bon Jovi do.

Spicy McHaggis

Spicy McHaggis said on the 15th Sep, 2010

(Nerds Id like to fuck)

daveyac8881

daveyac8881 said on the 15th Sep, 2010

I'd agree with MAB, they'd sell out the hordern easy, everyone knows who weezer is, the average mainstreamer is more likely to know who weezer is than atcq, i reckon they could get the entertainment centre maybe 3/4 full, but hordern would be a safer bet

berlinchair101

berlinchair101 said on the 15th Sep, 2010

I don't know anyone outside the internet who likes Weezer enough to pay money to see them if they came out.
