Dirty Three for Meredith MusicFestival
Sun 8th Aug, 2010 in Local News
Dirty Three has played Meredith three times in the festival’s history. The first time was in 1994 alongside Aussie rock greats Powder Monkeys, Magic Dirt and Spiderbait; the second was in 1997 when they melted minds with songs from their seminal album Horse Stories; and in 2004 Warren, Mick and Jim became part of Australian music folklore when they played a now infamous set in the Supernatural Amphitheatre amidst a biblical lightening storm.
No band is as synonymous with Meredith magic as Dirty Three and so it is most fitting that Aunty Meredith has invited them back in 2010 to help celebrate the festival’s 20th birthday.
The ballot for The 20th Meredith Music Festival opened last week, with a promise from Aunty that she will dish out a line-up that is “all killer, no filler” – and with an entrée as tasty as the Dirty Three now served up we can’t wait to hear what else she has in store.
Check out this footage of Dirty Three playing Everything’s Fucked inside the eye of the storm in 2004:
And if that doesn’t have your spine-tingling go back to 1994 when Dirty Three’s set incited frantic punters to invade the stage of the Amphitheatre. Fucking amazing:
Whilst getting ready to announce the return of Dirty Three to the Supernatural Amphitheatre, Aunty Meredith found some undeveloped negatives of their first two performances at the festival in her garage. She printed them out and have given them to FL to show off, so check them out here.
Earlier this year we hunted down Dirty Three’s biggest fan at The Laneway Festival in Melbourne and took them backstage to speak to Warren Ellis. You can watch the interview here.
Stay tuned to FL for the full Meredith line-up announcement next week and if you haven’t already head over to the festival’s website check out the twenty year on-line retrospective.
