Relentless7 cancel Splendourset

Ben Harper and Relentless7 were scheduled to play the headline set at Splendour in the Grass on Friday night, but unfortunately the band has been forced to cancel its set due to a ‘serious illness’.

Despite his bandmate’s illness Harper has issued a statement to reassure fans that he will still be playing “a full set with songs spanning his entire career with a very special line up of musicians that [he has] personally crafting for the festival”.

Harper formed Relentless7 in 2008, releasing the debut White Lies for Dark Times early last year. The group toured Australia in 2009 supporting Pearl Jam.

Not a big Harper fan but I'd guess people wouldn't rock up to see his backing band...no great loss, right?

I like the Relentless 7, but they have nothing on the Innocent Criminals. It may not be the same band playing, but its still going to be Ben Harper playing Ben harper and with it being a career spanning set, i think it will be 100 times better than it would have been.

yep, all you splendour goers are lucky as. i have seen ben harper with relentless7 three times now and he only ever plays stuff from white lies for dark times when he is playing with them. this will be much better.

Relentless7 is the best thing he's done in years. Still, solo headlining set should be a treat for Splendour kids.

I've never been a big Ben Harper fan but I think his covers are his strong point. Aside from a few standout original songs, I really don't think his music is that great.

I wasn't a fan of his Relentless 7 gig at The Metro early last year.

I saw R7 opening for Pearl Jam and they killed it. Will's right in that his covers are great - they did Never Tear Us Apart and Under Pressure.

Well I saw R7 opening for Pearl Jam and it was one of the most boring and talentless things I've ever seen. Not far removed from a run of the mill pub rock cover band just "relentlessly" blasting unimaginative chord progressions over a basic drum beat that a 4 year old could play.

You could tell the musicians were very ordinary when Harper had a problem with his guitar, and the rest of his band couldn't even improvise some kind of basic jam to keep momentum going ... they just stopped playing entirely for 5-10 minutes and twiddled their thumbs while somebody fixed Harper's guitar.
