Brumby announces music grantsat Cherry Bar
Fri 9th Jul, 2010 in Local News
Premier John Brumby today announced this year’s round of Victoria Rocks music grants at ACDC Lane’s Cherry Bar.
Before a host of industry guests and government officials, Brumby pledged a series of varying grants to dozens of local musicians and musical projects.
Indie-folkers The Little Stevies were this year’s biggest recipients, collecting a $16,000 Career Building Grant to help record a follow-up to their debut LP, Love Your Band, and assist with touring and publicity.
On a day when plenty of government cash was splashed, a broad range of artists such as Otouto, My Disco , Witch Hats and Fabulous Diamonds all received significant financial aid.
Last year’s major recipient Dan Kelly was on hand to perform a song from his government-assisted album and riff with the Minister for Arts, Peter Batchelor.
Batchelor conducted a brief interview with Kelly before joining in on a sing-a-long to Bindi Irwin Apocalypse Jam.
A reasonably relaxed but nonetheless out of context Brumby expressed his continued desire to invest in Victoria’s “creative economy” and build Melbourne as the nation’s creative capital.
$150,000 was granted to the 2010 Australasian World Music Expo, which aims to bring together and promote world music artists and performers
Local youth orientated organisation The Push, responsible for the FreeZa events and Push Over festival, also received nearly $10,000 in support of Face The Music, an annual conference for emerging Victorian musicians.
