New backyard venue

Sydney has an interesting new music venue. The Gate is a semi-regular event that takes place in a residential backyard in Ryde, Sydney.

With the support of their neighbors, The Gate’s founders have created an intimate (approx. 150 at capacity) and unique space with all the charm of the suburbs. The non-profit shows ask for a minimum donation at the door, and all revenue goes to the bands and maintenance.

According to their website, “We’re attempting to bring live music to a place that doesn’t really see much of it. Sydney has a lot of bands buried in the broad spread of the North Shore through to the Western Suburbs, and yet not a lot of venues exist in these places. We’re hoping that this will help foster a creative community that is excited about seeing music happen in new places – especially as music seems to get increasingly driven out of the inner city and inner suburbs thanks to rising expenses and increasingly difficult restrictions.”

hey all. i'm the organiser of the gate.

just wanted to briefly clarify the issue of soma's involvement with all of this (and hopefully allay any concerns).

the event is entirely initiated and organised by my wife carly and i. the goals for the event are completely summed up in what's stated on the website.

soma fits in to the picture like so: i'm a part of that church community, personally. when carly and i decided we wanted to have a go at putting on shows, soma were enthusiastic to help out in some way. as a result, they're supplying the bulk of the backline (pa equipment) at absolutely zero charge - this reduces the cost of the event enormously, and i wouldn't be able to do it if we didn't have this help, let alone pay the bands. soma get nothing else out of the events beyond some "supported by" acknowledgements that i wanted to include because i'm grateful that they're helping out. many of our friends from soma have also volunteered to help out by doing things like security, accounting, making coffees, assisting with setup, manning the door etc etc. again, we wouldn't be able to do it without them, and i'm very grateful for the help.

a few people have expressed concern about this being a platform for christian bands. to put it straight out there: the christian music scene is not my thing, and i have no interest in putting "churchy" acts on - as you can see on the website, we don't have any christian bands on our current lineups, and i've made a promise that we won't be booking any specifically christian acts in the future.

similarly, we have no interest in getting youth groups along to the shows or promoting the events amongst churches, and there will be no christian agenda pushed in the event. the gate exists purely to support sydney's live music scene, and i hope it succeeds in that in entirely positive ways.

thank you so much to the many people who have sent in their encouragement, i hope you get an opportunity to come and check out the space and enjoy some shows. i'm really excited about the prospects.

thanks,
joe

As long as my hard earned moolah doesn't go towards building a church or paying for the blood or body of christ then I'm all for it!
