Forty-one-year-old Leanne Herbert appeared in court via video link to face allegations that she swindled over $120,000 from innocent people by pretending to be an AC/DC concert promoter.
Herbert traveled through NSW towns for seven months in 2005 promoting a phony AC/DC gig to take place in Sydney at the end of that year. Police documents say that she fooled residents of Berkeley Vale, New Lambton, Woy Woy, and Gosford, deceiving a school, the Sydney Head and Neck Cancer Institute, a tax accountant, and other businesses.
Herbert promised her victims special seats, sponsorship deals, and other business ventures. One tax accountant sunk $28,000 into the fraud, and a committee member of the Sydney Head and Neck Cancer Institute was persuaded to pay $14,243 for “fund-raising opportunities.”
Police claim that Herbert was able to convince a business to pay $1000 a week for her living expenses while she found other promotion partners, making her the world’s best liar.
AC/DC management told police that they had never heard of either Herbert or the concert, and police finally arrested the mother-of-one on May 16th.
Herbert faces four counts of obtaining money by deception and will reappear in court on June 21st.
