Tote to reopen this Thusday

The venue formerly known as the Tote is set to re-launch itself to the media this Thursday.

After less than a month since Bar Open, Pony and Yah Yah’s, Andrew Portokallis, Jon Perring and Sam Crupi announced they would be taking control of the venue , a select number of industry guests have been invited to view recent refurbishments.

The venue’s new name will be unveiled at the launch, as will a list of performers scheduled to take to the famous stage over the coming weeks.

Locals Eagle and the Worm will perform on the night, in addition to a preview screening of the upcoming official documentary of the venue

The Tote’s closure in January was the catalyst for the enormous S.L.A.M. rally , which saw thousands take to the city streets to protest against damaging changes to liquor licensing laws.

They have replaced rotten floorboards and the bar, and brought in a powerful new Nexo sound system. Columns that once blocked sightlines have been removed and steel beams have been inserted into the roof for re-enforcement.

A van has been set up in the car park to sell tacos through a hole in the beer garden wall.

In contrast to the sluggish response from the previous Liquor Licensing Commissioner, new commissioner Mark Brennan approved the new liquor licence at 4pm yesterday - within 24 hours of receiving the paperwork. The venue will be open four nights a week while the licensees apply to have its high-risk conditions rolled back.

Local rock band Eagle and the Worm will play at the industry-only opening tonight, while bands including the Spazzys, Midnight Wolf, Japanese garage rockers Jackie and the Cedrics and possibly the Johnnys will play over the next month. Plans for a street party have been put on hold, but that may happen later in the year.

Still at issue is the name. ''We're still in negotiations,'' said Mr Crupi. ''We're confident it will work out, but we have a contingency plan as well.''

Haha nah I wish. Mines just based on live music in melbourne in general, with references to the closing of the Tote and protest rallies.
