C.W. Stoneking tour

C.W. Stoneking, the ARIA Award winning King of Hokum will take his pre-war blues, jazz and calypso on an Australian journey with a national tour in early July.

Playing his National Reso-Phonic guitar and tenor banjo, Stoneking will be joined by the Primitive Horn Orchestra on the tour which takes in five shows in as many nights

Stoneking recently won an invitation from Jack White to record a single for his Third Man label and will put the finishing touches on his awaited third album in late 2010.

Wednesday 7th July – Adelaide, The Gov
Thursday 8th July – Melbourne, Corner Hotel
Friday 9th July – Melbourne, The Prince Bandroom
Saturday 10th July – Sydney, Selina’s at Coogee Bay Hotel
Sunday 11th July – Brisbane, The Zoo

Gotta love CW. His portrait is in this year's Archibald finalists - never knew that the tats on his hands were Ishmael (Moby Dick) and Atticus (To Kill a Mockingbird).

I'm a broken record, I know. But this venue comment isn't about the size - Selina's has to be the weirdest place for a CW Stoneking gig ever.

It's a big two-level rock venue in the spirit of the UNSW Roundhouse and, to a lesser extent, The Forum. Nirvana played there when they toured for the BDO. The last band I saw there was Cog. It just doesn't seem the right kind of place for someone like CW.

I reckon if you went into the Coogee Bay Hotel on any given night you would struggle to find a person who had even heard of CW Stoneking. I agree with MAB that it is a strange venue choice.

I certainly can't imagine a CW Stoneking fan who would want to spend an evening at the Coogee Bay Hotel.
