The Strokes confirm Australiantour

Following on from the announcement of his solo tour this May, Julian Casablancas has confirmed on triple j this morning that The Strokes will be coming to Australia to play two shows this July.

In an interview with FasterLouder only two weeks ago Casablancas revealed that he expected the New York rockers to be here mid-year tentatively stating “I think so, but I don’t want to say things without knowing 100% for sure.”

Those dates are now 100% locked in and tickets for the shows go on sale Monday April 12th:

Thursday July 29th – Hordern Pavilion, Sydney
Friday July 30th – Festival Hall, Melbourne

With Splendour In The Grass happening the very weekend the band hits Australia it seems those rumours of a headline slot may not be all that far-fetched after all.

I honestly have no idea how popular the Strokes are at the moment. Not much hype around them.

Can't remember how many tickets are available in the presale, but not a lot I think so it'll probably sell out pretty quickly.

They've updated it - it originally had two Melbourne dates - with one on the 30th at Festival Hall, which just happens to be the same night as the Strokes...

Maybe Yeasayer will support coz they haven't been announced in the sideshows on the Splendour website but they are surely big enough to have their own headline show. Both bands are from NYC though, so here's hoping, also means that I won't have to fork out for a separate sideshow!

The Strokes were a pleasure, lighting was awesome, I liked the Pong > Tetris > Space Invaders > Pac Man patterns.

The Sydney gig was fantastic. They only played for just over an hour, but it was a damn good hour.

I was pleasantly surprised by how well they played last night. The set was definitely short with them playing for only 45 minutes before going off. The encore was five songs which brought the playing time to an hour.

That said, it probably didn't need to be longer. The energy was high throughout and the crowd loved it. I found it a little strange how long a lot of the crowd was. Probably 2/3 of the crowd would have been in primary school when Is This It? came out.

The lighting was terrific and the simple staging on both sides of stage worked very effectively with the lights.

Julian Casablancas stage banter was pretty woeful, but I'm not convinced he wasn't off his head for most of the show.

I thought the crowd around me was great. I was pretty much dead centre of the Hordern and most people were trying to dance, not a lot of pushing and far less aggravation from other punters than Foals the night before.

Fantastic show last night. The crowd was great, they played well and there was a good representation from each of the albums.

Only 2 gripes of the night: We got a shorter set than a lot of the other shows they've been playing (checked some they did around Europe, around 18 - 19 songs and we got about 14) and I really wanted to hear 12:51 badly.

I didn't mind so much though. I laughed when halway through a song started singing "is thiiis burning, an eternal flaaa-" and then giggled and said "sorry".

he's very awkward, I personally think, he just doesn't know what to say, like at splendour he always seemed like he was about to say something profound but cut out mid sentence because he obviously didn't know where it was going, example " in life, you only live once..... you only remember things once... uh right let's do this" cut to song.
it's fine by me cuz he made the effort and quite frankly is an amazing talent.

Richard Ashcroft on the other hand... pretty sure he called us "fuckers". I won't be listening to the verve for a while.
