Julian Casablancas tour

The news slipped out a little ahead of schedule, but it has now been officially confirmed that Julian Casablancas will be touring Australia in May.

His website confirmed the tour yesterday, admitting that “It’s been a secret for a while [but] Julian and the band are playing Australia in May. We’re all very excited. Thank heavens you know now. It was getting awkward.”

There’s usually nothing awkward about the über-hip New Yorker, who released Phrazes for the Young, his installment of the ongoing ‘Strokes solo album’ saga, late last year.

After three acclaimed albums with The Strokes, Casablancas’ solo debut featured his trademark raw energy, effortless cool and tantalising guitar riffs melded with electronic flourishes.

With three dates in as many days, this is a whirlwind tour for Casablancas, hopefully paving the way to a tour with his ‘other’ band a little later in the year.

Thursday 6th May – Tivoli, Brisbane
Friday 7th May – Palace Theatre, Melbourne
Sunday 9th May – Metro Theatre, Sydney

I've gotta say I always thought Julian Casablancas was a bit of a cock but between his oddball solo album and "Saw a Spanish guy doing the Bartman!" I've really warmed to him.

Yep, just got my ticket in the mail. Forum shows have always been excellent in my experience, as have Hi Fi bar (apart from the View, which although awesome was pretty violent) and Corner Hotel.

I can't believe I am saying this, but in Stefan's defence, most great Australian bands originate from Perth, at least the ones I follow do.

my venue experience has been rather short, most gigs i go to are either the palace or the forum, been to one at festival hall a few years back, one at each billboards, rod laver and etihad, but ive got a few coming up at the other ones with all the splendour sideshows so i shall see what theyre like soon enough.

as for Casablancas. I got pretty drunk, i'm sure I was having a great time but my memory is fuzzy of the whole experience to be honest. kinda sucks

When he played the modern age I have to say it's one of my favourite gig moments so far. It's my favourite strokes song :) the entire gig was great. I thought Andy clockwise was a laugh, just a laugh. And Julian was soo good, lol to the chick percussionist, I think she made one heard contribution.

Yeah... it's fine to really like them, but if you start calling those bands 'great bands' then I would disagree.

Australian bands I would consider great would be bands like AC/DC, The Go-Betweens, The Triffids, INXS (although damaging that a bit).

Went to JC too on friday night, didnt show up for Andy Clockwise, was a good move according to reports. JC put on a great show, crowd went absolutely nuts for the Strokes covers, im glad he added them as much as I like the solo songs. Only disappointment was the exclusion of "Tourist" from what was a very short setlist. "I wish It was christmas" sucks balls. Starting to hate this venue, they are becoming notoriously bad for having acts start later than specified times... and it was 30mins on Fri night. Motives are probably purely financial which is quite sad. Crowd were getting so excited at the end of every pre-casablancas set song played it got annoying, so many people checking phones and watches it was ridiculous. Not taking anything away from JC. Top gig.

Eh, I'm glad I sat this one out and opted for The Strokes which turned out to be only $15 more expensive for those who have to pay to see them. It is kinda sad that he did have to pull out the original Strokes songs, which he wrote and aren't covers, coz he obviously didn't have enough material from 11th Dimension to sustain a full headline time-slot. I mean Jarvis Cocker had that one solo album that he played from but the banta in between songs kept everything going and to my surprise and respect, he didn't pull out "Common People" or "Disco 2000".

On another note, was Jules wasted whilst he performed, slouched over a stool like he usually is with The Strokes?

Yeah, I was pissed about that late start too. I counted 7 in leather jackets, and 2 dudes in cardigans... I think he opened with Ludlow St, but I could be wrong.

well to be fair i had a singlet on underneath so i wouldn't burn but it was the smart choice when i ended up waiting for a delayed train for 30 mins, fucking metro. worst.

it was fantastic :D tremendous voice. although i feel obligated to point out, in a non-dickish way, that its called I'll try anything once, its the b-side or demo of you only live once.

im still over the moon about the modern age, twas the highlight of my concert going year, thus far anyway.

Andy Clockwise was beyond terrible, it reminded me of when Har Mar Superstar supported RHCP.
You Only Live Once sounded great, but yeah it was a really short gig. i don't have his album so i'm not sure if everything of the new album was played or not.

Let's just play fast and loud and hope the kids don't realise I'm on tour with a bored pick up band.

i had some drunk guy who was friends with said shirtless bald guy pushing into the chicks next to me an my mate, we were next to the sound thing, and this was before the show, the bald guy and the drunk guy got in a fight and the drunk guy went home before the show, then that bald guy barged through during hard to explain, and i saw him later with no shirt at the front, its quite sickening.
