triple j Hottest 100 results

While the winning song may have been revealed a little early, there were 99 other surprises to be enjoyed in the triple j Hottest 100 countdown yesterday. Fittingly for Australia Day, four of the top ten were from homegrown artists, with festival heroes Art Vs Science claiming the #2 spot (for their “novelty song”, according the Herald Sun ).

Proving once again that the minds behind St Jerome’s Laneway Festival know how to pick – œem, Mumford & Sons made repeat appearances in the 100, with stiff competition from fellow headliners Florence + the Machine. That other travelling summer festival Big Day Out was also well-represented in the top ten, thanks to Hilltop Hoods, Muse and Lily Allen.

Playing a variety of music. (sure they play a variety, but they repeat the fuck out of that variety).
They play too much Aus HipHop for my liking.
They rape songs that people think are popular to the point where the song gives you the shits.
But yeah, mainly sick of hearing the same old shit each day.

obviously you love your Js and im very sorry if i have offended your beloved radio station

I probably listen to between one and two hours of radio a week. Most of that would be Triple J, but I'd hardly say that makes Triple J my 'beloved radio station'.

I would agree that they play too much Aussie hip hop however I also constantly hear people requesting it on Super Request etc. Clearly there are plenty of people out there who do like listening to it. I'm guessing it would be more palatable if Aussie hip hop was actually good.

I think the argument that they don't play a wide enough range of music doesn't really fly though. Radio stations are essentially forced to have a selection of songs on high rotation because people want to hear them but don't listen to the radio all day long. If you listen to the radio for multiple hours a day then you are destined to hear many of the same songs day in day out. I am certain Triple J's high rotation list is longer than any of the commercial stations.

The comment about Triple J 'raping' popular songs through overplaying is probably true, however they are the youth radio station and that probably reflects their listener base. How many teenagers play their favourite song over and over again for days until even they are sick of it?

I think Triple J has had a substantial impact in recent years of bringing less commercial music to a lot more people than previously. The popularity of music festivals and the Hottest 100 have exploded in recent years and I think Triple J can take substantial credit for this.

triple j never billed itself as the "alternative" station. and whats "alternative" anymore anyway? are you one of those hipster douchebags who is frightened of the mainstream? its ok to like something other people like, really!

apart from the aussie hip-hop overkill, i can't fault the j's too much....they break a lot of new music, they support homegrown artists & their presenters are pretty consistent & intelligent. richard kingsmill can't help it that ed hardy-wearers have jumped on the hottest 100 bandwagon.
but he does have to cater to what their target market demands <-- its a necessary evil, unless you want your audience switching over to dipshitfm.

did you read my entire response or just that one line??? allow me to clarify my earlier comment, "triple j has become a parody of itself...... due to a large proportion of its fan base". i'm fairly certain jjj has always been considered an alternative station, but that is irrelevant. as mentioned, i don't listen to the station often. i agree, there is no alternative anymore, and there probably never was other than for marketing purposes... i enjoy the fact that good music is able to be enjoyed by a broader audience these days... had you read my entire post and not been so quick to try and shoot me down, you would have realised that my issue was with the listeners who every year complain about the #1 or the top spots because "jjj isn't nova/2day fm". i think you missed the whole point of my comment, but fire away and release your rage....
