Triple J unveil 2010 line-up

Following on from the announcement of its new Breakfast team last week, triple j has revealed its final – œline-up’ for 2010.

Longtime triple j favourite and part-time Frenzal Rhomb-er , The Doctor, will finally be able to enjoy a sleep in as he straps in for a year as the new host of Drive. He will be the only member of the current breaky team to be staying on the jays, with Robbie Buck heading over to to 702 ABC Sydney and the delightful Marieke Hardy hanging up her headphones to continue with her writing in 2010.

This shift has also meant that Scott Dooley, Drive’s host for the past two years, will also be moving on. Dools has enjoyed a dream run as a member of the triple j team, originally securing a place on air after winning a competition six years ago.

triple j has sucked hard for a few years now and the breakfast show was a big reason. a bigger reason was scott dooley - he was the reason i stopped listening to triple j at all. i may actually give them a chance again.

I used to hate dools with a pashion.... humor was just so flat.... but I actually started to 'not mind' him this year.... mostly because he had random guests everyday sharing the job.... and his ability to comeup with a crazy idea and run with it (soccer match with ladysov was great)

see thats the thing i want more of on triple j. i want to hear how much these guys know about music. the only two who really show any signs of that are zan rowe and kingsmill. the rest seem to do nothing more than back announce the songs then give a summary of whats coming up.

Dools is who I listen to the most on JJJ because I'm generally in the car the most during that time and I don't really listen to the radio otherwise. It's definitely not the popular opinion, but I will actually miss him. I love listening to him.

i dunno about Kingsmill being the only reputable one. I give a lot of credibility to Zan Rowe, she knows her shit and she speaks about music with such charisma. Sarah Howles also gets my thumbs up with presenting. Good voice and also knows a bit more about music than just the name of the artist and the track.

Triple J might say it's the youth broadcaster, but really it's just an alternative avenue for music for whoever is interested. Beyond Hack's occasional focus on young people, it's pretty broad.

Is it just me or has it actually been a bag of shit this year? Beyond announcers and agendas, the music they've been championing seems to be really lacklustre, and their playlists are ignorant of a whole heap of much better stuff that they definitely would have heard. Even when Kingsmill talks about their music policies, they seem to be gearing for a wide listening base as opposed to quality output for the sake of quality.

A whole bunch of Karnivool, Hilltop Hoods and post-glam pop singers instead of artists/bands like Lil Wayne, Girls, Dirty Projectors - all genuinely interesting, inventive and looked over by JJJ.

There is too much good music out there that Triple J will most likely never play, 160gb ipod is a friend. Even if aussie hip hop wasn't infesting the airwaves I'd never use triple J as a resource for music anymore, my musical taste has become a beast.

I can't see myself listening to Tom and Alex on the way to work next year though. I find them quite painful to listen to and a little too forced.

aussie hip-hop killed triple j. i used to be glued to the js, but got sick of the "me an' my mates sippin' beers" brand of hip-hop. a couple of weeks ago i thought i'd give them another chance, but it didn't take long before i was forced to go elsewhere. so called 'acts' like the hilltop hoods (who require circus acts to share the stage with them to stop viewers switching off the arias) have destroyed triple j.

Australian hip-hop has a massive avid following, not my personal genre preference, but it has proved itself as a worthy genre based on large popularity.
As for Hilltop needing acts to keep people interested, that's just plain ignorant. From what I've seen they keep a crowd thoroughly entertained without the use of a stage show, but they're clearly at a point where they can and should be putting on great stage shows because live music is not just about the music by any means.
Times change, so does the music. It's just unfortunate for you that there is another stack of music out there that you can't enjoy.

Heres my theory;

JJJ have split up the quota of airtime right... between various genres.

Problem being the HIPHOP/RAP genre basically consists of a handful of aussie bands, they don't play much American stuff cause its mostly commercial crap.

So whilst you might have a pool of 10000 bands to fill in 20% of the station's requirement of 'Indie"

You only have like 5 acts to fill the 20% quota of hip hop.

This is why you turn on the radio and find hilltop hoods on it.....ALL THE FUCKING TIME.

And as with most acts.... overhearing them will have you pulling your hair out... especially if your not into them in the first place!

That is absolute bullshit.

Triple J has gradually improved their ratings over the last few years and is more popular than it has been throughout this decade.

Certainly Triple J had their golden period in the '90s but this had more to do with music at the time than Triple J's broadcasting. Grunge was massive and despite being 'alternative' it became very commercially mainstream.

Today you certainly couldn't say that the genres Triple J favours are the most commercially successful. R&B and Pop rule the commercial scene. Despite this, music festivals have grown out of sight in Australia and bands like Muse can get an album to number one in Australia. This has to be at least partially attributable to the rise of Triple J in recent years and the increasing popularity of different genres of alternative music in Australia.

Triple J's ratings have risen, and that's exactly the problem. They're so proud that they reach over 1 million people now, which seems counter-intuitive given that they were established to be an avenue for music, controlled not by ratings but by taste.

Muse made it to number one by churning out a piece of shit album geared to make it to number one. They never would have even joked about a song like Uprising four years ago. It's like Sam Sparro took over songwriting duties, and lo and behold they made a fuckload of money and charted highly. Tellingly, Triple J played their singles as soon as they surfaced and featured the album, despite it's horrendous lack of anything redeeming.

anyway, the point about kingsmill. yes, he is the music director of triple j, and yes, their ratings have risen. so if he was working for dmg or austereo, he would be lauded. it's not programming genius. it's a common denominator, it's flirting with the masses, and in the process it has lost all of its frequently touted credibility.

I think Triple J still exposes Australian music fans to a large amount of quality music. Certainly far more than any national commercial station could claim.

If you prefer a more niche station such as FBI to Triple J then you are probably beyond Triple J's target audience. They're not targetting the small minority who research music heavily and listen to new bands online who no one has ever heard of.

I think Triple J's mantra is and should be to play a fairly mainstream selection of alternative types of music. Triple J predominantly plays acts that don't get played on commercial stations. To suggest that Triple J should skip over those acts and play more obscure stuff seems illogical to me.

Triple J's ratings have risen, and that's exactly the problem. They're so proud that they reach over 1 million people now, which seems counter-intuitive given that they were established to be an avenue for music, controlled not by ratings but by taste.

Muse made it to number one by churning out a piece of shit album geared to make it to number one. They never would have even joked about a song like Uprising four years ago. It's like Sam Sparro took over songwriting duties, and lo and behold they made a fuckload of money and charted highly. Tellingly, Triple J played their singles as soon as they surfaced and featured the album, despite it's horrendous lack of anything redeeming.

How fucking good is Sam Simmons? his Interview with Miles from Akron family yesterday was gold!

He should host JJJ all day. I found myself wanting to skip some of the music they were playing so I could hear him talk again.

Kind of like Robbie Buck when he was on fire in Interviews (back in his drive days)... Its a rare thing to listen to the radio FOR hosts rather that music.

Agreed. Sam Simmonds is fucking ridiculous. Last year when he hosted Super Request over Summer, it was suddenly a show that didn't make me want to punch myself in the head.
