Returning to Australia in January for the Big Day Out circuit, Girl Talk is promising more than just a man and his laptop. Having kept things fairly lo-fi as the headliner of 2009 Laneway Festival – needing only a stage full of dancing bodies to amplify the party mood – there’s a little more dazzle planned for the Boiler Room.
Speaking to FasterLouder this week, Girl Talk’s alter ego Gregg Gillis hinted at the trimmings he’s packing for the long haul down under. “On my last full United States tour, I could bring along a handful of friends to help with physical props,” he enthused. “You know, confetti, balloons; making it a bit more of a spectacle.
“The props are a whole bunch of handmade stuff that’s been increasing in size and scope. I’m bringing one of those people with me to Big Day Out, and have another person in Australia helping out. I’d love to push it further this time and make it more insane if possible.”
Don’t expect a Simian Mobile Disco style set-up though. “I want to focus on handmade stuff. I feel the big light shows can be cool for a certain aesthetic, but our whole operation is a bit more of a free-for-all house party. Right now we have leaf-blowers with paint-rollers attached to the end that shoot toilet paper, like streamers – just stuff you could see at a house party, not a big fancy dance club.”
If it sounds like someone has been taking notes from the psychedelic spectacular of the Flaming Lips, Gillis is the first to acknowledge the inspiration. “I feel it’s tough because they knock it out the park, but I want to do stuff like that without biting their style too much. There’s no reason why we can’t do that sort of the thing at this point.”
