Southbound Basecamp Revealed
Sun 22nd Nov, 2009 in Local News
They have been promising for a while that this year’s base camp at Southbound is going to be bigger and better than ever, and they weren’t kidding.
Strictly for campers, the Southbound base camp just about has enough to keep you there for the whole three days without even going into the festival proper. It will be fully licensed so you don’t have to be penned into a bar, or stash a gooner in your sleeping bag, and it will remain open 24 hours so you won’t need to go hang out at your tent and keep the nanas awake if you’re not ready for bed yet.
For the whole 72 hours, there will be DJs, artists and street performers around for your amusement. National and international DJs will bounce the Groove Tent on Friday night, then it will be full of cabaret and comedy on Saturday and Sunday nights. There is a bunch of new stuff and old favourites planned including:
Western Saloon Bar and Steakhouse (with a bucking bull!)
Vodka and Oxygen bar (vodka and O2 shots)
The Lounge
24 hour café
Bollywood Restaurant
Internet café
Healing centre (with yoga/tai chi for the hippies in the mornings)
Spliff Cinema (indoors this year)
The Karaoke Tent (beer is essential here)
Market Bazaar
Silent Disco
Fancy Dress Shop (and who doesn’t love a dress up?)
General Store
Exclusive Southbound Radio (thanks to Murdoch Uni)
In the main festival area, away from the stages in the Coconut club and Eco village you can catch a bunch of DJs and a damn good chunk of the acts we saw at the One Movement Fringe Festival Last month. Actually, there are too many to list, but check out Fear of Comedy and Minute 36 in particular.
The Stagebound finals are on this Friday at the Rosemount and The Brow Horn Orchestra, The Siren Tower, Laced Affair, Blackmilk, The Triggerjackets, Rainy Day Women and The Atlas Mountains stand to win a chunk of money and a Southbound gig.
All this stuff doesn’t even touch on the main festival acts on the bill, and it’s only for campers, so if you want in, act soon, VIP and Sunday are sold out already.
