Abercrombie Hotel closing

The much-loved Abercrombie Hotel is the latest venue to fall in Sydney’s march towards late-night mediocrity.

The long-time home of Purple Sneakers and many other intermittent parties has announced it will close its doors in mid-January 2010. Aside from the music on offer, its grungy charms, pub-priced beers and summery outdoor courtyard will be sorely missed.

A statement from Purple Sneakers confirms: “The last Purple Sneakers event at the venue will be held on Friday January 15th. Purple Sneakers as a club night will be moving to another venue the following Friday January 22nd, details to come.”

Nobody has hearted this, be the first!

Firstly, the Abercrombie isn't that decent to begin. Secondly, that place has one of the most profitable club nights in Sydney and it still finds a way to fail. Lastly, there are already great music venues popping up around Sydney to replace our constant need for pubs.

No sympathy from Albert on this occasion.

Cad factory and Red Rattler in marrickville, Hellen Rose's in surry hills and Good God Smallclub on Liverpool st. Those are the few that come to mind.

Also the OAF is only 3 years old and is already pwning them all.

i think this was going to be closing soon anyway, due to that mini-suburb being developed in the old brewery site

probably closed due to rsa, health inspectors, building inspections, council sound level testing, underage drinkers... it wasnt the best venue ever... there are much better out there.

According to Mess and Noise, the owner, who also owned the old brewery (which he signed off to be turned into a suburb instead of a university facility as per the thousands of petition signatures) was just over it. Can understand why.

You can buy an uber clean building. Throw 10's of 1000's of $$$ at it and doll it up and you still won't have a good venue.

Good venues are about history. The Crombie isn't really a place to see bands. But its a great ole' building. The toilets were sheer class...

All this gentrification is fucking bullshit.

I had an inkling that down the line it'd have to stop its 3am shutout because of the mini suburb being built on the brewery grounds and all the inner city yuppies that move there will complain about loud music. But it turns out they won't even have to deal with that.

Just knock down the history and replace it with flash units for people with $$$

Let's knock down every old pub and refurbish it into the bank hotel!

"pub priced" beers are hard to come by.. tho uni bars like uts glasshouse (where nofrills are putting on drum'n'bass regularly) have pretty damn cheap drinks. had to be there for calyx n teebee halloween. awesome.

That's kind of what I was getting at - a place to enjoy nights of music with reasonably priced drinks. I.e. not at a club.

Am aware that we have less live venues than say Melbourne but I don't think it's at breaking point really. Agree that more pub priced drinks would be nice though..

Love or hate PS or any of the other events that happened at the Scab, I can't tell you how many bizzare/incredible/hilarious things have happened at this pub over the years.

For all the smashed toilets, broken glass, five stiches in my foot, damaged eardrums, jugs of beer, 5am staffies, sticky carpet, drinking in daylight hours (before OR after something) and various states of undress - Abercrombie, I salute you!

The Abecrombie isn't a live venue. It hardly constituted as a hotel due to its peculiar trading hours. It's a club. And a club inhibited weekly by 17 year olds keen on drinking sugary stuff and getting munted to DJs playing born ruffians for the fifth time.

If anything, these kids should be out going to gigs at warehouses, venues or, god forbid, our "dying pubs" to save our "fledgling scene". Instead, they decided to make 500m queues on Friday and Saturday night up Broadway to suffer the same stupid scenester fate.

The closing of the Abercrombie isn't a loss for the Sydney scene. Hell, it's a motherfucking win. Gone is a venue whose culture epitomised drunken listening parties in a place with a style already recreated elsewhere. Hopefully it means the people who frequented the place see past the place's aesthetic and infamy and start to actually seek out proper music venues.

...Sometimes you just want a change or there arent any good shows on a particular week. What's left to do then? Sit at a pub with mates and whinge about the week? That's done often enough. Sometimes its just good to have a place to get loose and boogie.

Yes the setlists are repetitive, yes a large portion of the DJ's are into themselves.... I can't stand the que thing... Hence when I go its mostly on Saturdays... no que.... cool bouncers and yeh.

With the crombie closed... essentially Sydney will have Spectrum and World Bar for such aforementioned nights.

I'm with you on bagging scenesters. But does 1 night (Sneakers) tarnish the entire venue? Look at 77, which to me will always be a live venue.. yet it hosts Starfuckers which is 'over 9000' in the douche rating. If we're going to bag out Sceneters... that would be the place to start.

purple sneakers is a great club and this entire it doesn't haven't live bands so i'm glad it shuts down is really narrow minded and pathetic.
Purple sneakers is a great night, you all seem to talk smack on it a lot i put it down to envy.
