Sydney live music hub The Metro Theatre was today renamed the Virgin Mobile Metro. Century Venues (owners of The Metro Theatre) and Virgin Mobile have formed a partnership that will keep the beloved venue buzzing and offer some – œVIP benefits’ for Virgin Mobile members. According to Century Venues, the alliance will allow for venue enhancements and more opportunities for Metro act to find exposure. There are also set to be initiatives for young and unsigned bands to have a run on the stage.

The ribbon will be cut on the Virgin Mobile Metro with a launch gig on Tuesday 29 September. Having delivered the acclaimed Zounds last month (read the Album of the Week review on FasterLouder), Dappled Cities is set to headline the night alongside past Garage2V winners Villains Of Wilhelm and Seabellies. As easy as it is to hate on this, I'm for it (and not a virgin customer)

The corporate dollar will be invested in fixing up the venue, it'll bring in some cool gadgetry, and some interesting recorded concerts.

I think the commercialisation of bands and venues is a natural progression for the music industry. Whereas previosuly, record companies held all the power, their influence is declining and bands are able to dictate more as to how they make their money.

I really don't see how it is much different to actors and sports stars profiting from endorsements. Clearly this creates the very real risk of completely selling out for a band, but if they manage it responsibly and don't get greedy, it should be workable.

Musicians shouldn't need to be impoverished to maintain artistic credibility.
