only animal collective is boring, whereas them crooked vultures have put out one of the most solid albums of 2009.

just wanted to bump this thread to the top.

this album rocks. and i was sceptical at first. why? i'll tell you why:

a) dave grohl invented foo fighters & they are just....terrible.
b) josh homme, god love him, has become one of those musicians who needs to hear the word "no" more often. and he is not as a good a vocalist as he believes (don't hit me, josh! its true)
c) hype normally means bad things

however, i then remembered that john paul jones was in led zeppelin. led fucking zeppelin, everybody. and had a hand in some of their more badass riffs & tunes. and is the kind of fella who busts out double-basses.

jpj is actually the coolest part of this whole thing, and the album is better than i expected. i was expecting qotsa reject tunes, watered- down to foo fighters level.

what it really sounds like is if a led zep b-side fucked a qotsa b-side. it makes you want to get buzzed & take your clothes off. and in fact, thats what i did the first time i heard it. i had a fucking time.

anyway, i'm going to this show & i'm excited as hell, mainly to see jpj. if anybody else is going, come find me & buy me a drink. i like whiskey & i'll be wearing a cooler led zep tee than you.

/end manifesto

whilst I agree that JPJ is probably the best part of this band. i have to completely disagree that these guys released one of the most solid albums of 2009.
Seems like Homme and Grohl wanted to play together, they recruited JPJ coz they could. Then they got together, had no inspiration, just jammed some songs out because they have finesse as musicians, quickly laid the songs down in the studio, released tickets before anyone knew any of their shit.

I have a feeling that the live performance is going to be awesome. Much more raw than the album obviously. But to be honest, if I'd heard the album first, I wouldnt have paid the 106 for a ticket.

fair enough.

this album probably wouldn't make my top ten of 2009 (or maybe it would - i opted out of lists for 2009) - but its one of the most consistent releases of last year. look, these guys are not doing anything revolutionary or ambitious here - there are some real 'by-the-numbers' moments on the record, granted. the fact that much of it does sound like hybrid-led zep/qotsa (and the rest of it sounds like josh condensing all his favourite led zep riffs into one) kind of illustrates that. but its a just a good, straightforward rock album - and i like that. i want more of that. i want less foo fighters.

and yes, grohl & homme probably ran into a studio, creaming their pants at the thought of writing with john paul jones, then jammed for a few weeks & threw this shit together. but it sounds like they had a grand fucking time doing it, and actually, this project has been rumoured for a few years anyhow. i suspect it was just kept under wraps quite well, because none of these players are anybody the hipster douche squadron gives a shit about.

and to be fair, there was a lot of live shit floating around online almost as soon as the hype machine cranked on, and the band was not working too hard to stop bootlegged stuff leaking. i heard almost all the album tracks (from multiple european shows) before i bought a ticket.

but yes, the live show is going to be quality. agreed. it will be some sort of knicker-dropping shit. cannot wait.

ps. why do my posts not ever show caps? i do use them when i type. its annoying. almost as annoying as foo fighter fans.

and here's what i don't get - you started all this by saying that before you heard any of their tracks, you were extremely sceptical,

but you are a big led zeppelin fan, and acknowledge that last time dave grohl worked with josh homme (specifically, drumming on tracks where homme was the frontman), it was stellar.

but you were sceptical because grohl started foo fighters (who, by your calculations, had gone downhill well before he drummed on songs)?

i dont get it.

*pulls out semantics card*
i said i was "sceptical", but didn't say "extremely"....a little bit of cynicism is healthy, too much is not cool ;)
*puts away semantics card*

reasons for initial scepticism, redux

1. dave grohl

he invented & fronts foo fighters
i think their collected works, bar 'the colour & the shape', are poor
possibility of grohl fronting them crooked vultures, instead of being in his rightful place frightened me2. josh homme

can sometimes be lacking in filtering out lesser quality musics (see various desert sessions tracks, half of lullabies to paralyse, some of era vulgaris, various collaborations)
vocally, is fine in small doses, esp when better singers are around to take on the more complex shit. but not my first choice. obsessed with falsetto. too much falsetto can be a bad thing (outside of glam rock)3. fanboy hype

kind of acts like a red flag more often than nothow them crooked vultures helped me overcome the hype machine

1. presence of john paul jones

among general awesomeness, he wrote one of my favourite led zep tunes & riffs (black dog)2. the homme-grohl formula

proven track record (albeit with other supporting players who are not in this particular picture, yes) when both are playing what they're best at3. the album

its fun, its good, i like it
