Victoria’s Sunday Herald-Sun reported yesterday that UK trio Muse is set to headline Big Day Out in 2010. The band has been tipped as a likely contender for the January tour, earning a spot in FasterLouder’s round-up of line-up predictions.

While the Herald Sun offered no official source for its discovery, it has been on the money before. Last year, the paper revealed Neil Young’s plan to visit Australia for shows in summer – a tour that resulted in a headline spot at Big Day Out.

Muse has had two triumphant showings on the BDO mainstage, first in 2004 and again in 2007. They swiftly returned for arena shows at the end of – œ07 before disappearing home to the studio. With new album The Resistance out 14 September, the time is certainly right for a return.

I agree with this. Springsteen fits with the whole Neil Young fiasco last year and if Lees and West are serious about the new direction then The Boss is a sure thing. With Muse playing second and probably Blink on there as well.

Stone Temple Pilots have their new album new in December.

Mastodon are due out here (because I'm sick of waiting to see them again).

And as for Weezer - I'd love it, but no chance.

That was a very poor choice of words by me. By no means did I mean it the way it sounded. The fiasco I speak of was referring to the masses of people screaming "who the fuck is Neil Young" while running to see Prodigy.

It was an outstanding performance that I am glad I saw.

well considering 07 we had muse followed by the killers then tool i think that was a great year so through in maybe stone temple pilots, the racontours or metallica and i think thats value for money. So your saying you would be happy paying $155 to see muse and placebo headlining?

I'd probably be there; but the undercard would be essential (just like scoring TV on the Radio, My Morning Jacket and Lupe Fiasco worked so well for this year's BDO). They need strong internationals like Silversun Pickups, Cage the Elephant, Mastodon, Passion Pit...I'd also be pretty happy with Enter Shikari, too.

I would be happy if Mew made it to Australia at all.
I don't think I would have enjoyed Arcade Fire in an Australian festival environment. I have been just whoring myself out on sideshows the past few years and I have enjoyed the week of gigs more than the nine previous BDO's. It would need to be a mammoth lineup to get me paying money to attend.

That's a fair call.
If I wasn't covering it for Tunebinder, I probably wouldn't have gone to the BDO on my own accord. It's not a bad day overall, though - some acts work really well in the festival environment; and Neil Young was no exception.

I agree with you slightly... I think with the lineup that TCV have they could go on to make some of the most dynamic and inventive music we'll hear for a very long time. It also has the ability to flop like nothing has ever flopped before though..

RATM, The White Stripes and perhaps Neil Young are possibly the only bands/acts I'd consider to be a bigger drawcard these days. While the others may or may not be good bands, none of them would draw a crowd like Muse.

Having said that, I don't think Muse are big enough to headline a BDO. Second headliner for sure, but main act - I don't think so...

from recollection powderfinger got offered headline because they had just won hottest 100 but didnt take it. i think they might even have been number 3 with placebo and rammstein both after them.
funnily i got dropped while attempting to crowd surf during powderfinger because i was still pumped up from the previous band (i think it was 28 days) and hadnt noticed the slightly different crowd demographic.

I think he'd be an awesome follow up to Neil Young. With so many other festivals gaining prominence over BDO in recent years they need a big signature like him and as BDO still has prestige overseas it might happen. Plus there's a common factor with a whole bunch of big acts BDO has signed recently all headlining the bigger UK festivals which The Boss did.

Or I'm talking shit coz I'm now stoned. haha.

That sounds like a good vibes lineup... Are you sure you got BDO?
And Dizzee Rascal must've been here at least 2 or 3 times in the last 2 years...

Would be the blandest headlining combo ever.
No Doubt/Bruce Springsteen + Blink-182 would be much better.

True, Powderfinger were offered headline spot but didnt take it. They played second last, after Placebo with Rammstein last in Melbourne.

I remember being very happy at the news of Limp Dickhead pulling out. Made the day so much more enjoyable. Placebo were awesome that day. So were Rammstein and PJ Harvey.

I saw the amount of bogans at the Prodigy on the way out of BDO, fair point. But i still think that they retain some kind of class and cool that calvin harris and dizzee rascal (even though i quite enjoy him) do not. I saw the Prodigy 2 nights later at the riverstage and the crowd was awesome, bogan factor almost non-existant from anywhere i was and just an absolutely incredible gig.

Yeah, its quite sad really. Just talking to people at the goldy last year and friends and stuff and seeing the recurring theme of people not actually attending for bands kinda made me feel ill.

Agreed with your comments about Dizzee; he is a woeful excuse of an emcee in comparison to Lupe who has very good flow, wordplay and good live show.

In contrast, I completely disagree with what you are saying about Groove Armada! They are one of the best live electronic acts I have seen and have a lot more going for them than one or two hit singles!

I guess it's all a taste thing though; pretty much an arbitrary argument. Personally anything with dub delay, horns and awesome beats is enough to get my vision blurry.

That is true, no new album just a best of and a forthcoming. I am worried if I saw them a second time I'd really hate it though. Happened with Basement Jaxx at Future Music earlier this year.

I think if Groove Armada are coming though they'd be much more suited to good vibes or summadayze! I guess it's all a timing thing

Yeah, we were based around Taupo for a week which was great. Didn't actually get to the snow. The couple of days I was planning to ski it was blowing a gale and the lifts were mostly shut.

Went quad biking, jet boating, black water rafting/caving, and some other "extreme" activities.
