Those fearless freaks The Flaming Lips brought Splendour to a gloriously psychedelic close last night (Sunday 26 July). In true hands-on fashion, Wayne Coyne spent the half-hour break before their performance coordinating the stage set-up.

When show time came, the band disappeared – only to be – œre-birthed’ through 12-foot flaming lips. Coyne’s giant inflatable ball made an early appearance, with the main man riding out onto the hands of the crowd. Flanked by dancing frogs and she-yetis, Coyne was a magnetic and sincere ringleader.

After the extended opening, there was only time for a short set-list. The acoustic guitar came out for a heartfelt Fight Test, with The Yeah Yeah Yeah song prefaced by a shout-out to Barack Obama. Yellow and white bouncing balls stayed in the air throughout, with confetti cannons exploding at almost every turn. Coyne’s magical megaphone came out as the set powered towards the triumphant closer Do You Realize? There could be no more fitting send-off to the Supertop.
