CHECK OUT ALL THE SPLENDOUR PHOTOS FROM DAY ONE AND DAY TWO.

MGMT brought an oracular spectacular to the Supertop on the Splendour home stretch. Playing their only Australian show, the Brooklyn outfit was met with an overflowing tent at 8pm. After Grinspoon’s fired-up set, their dreamy psych-pop was more subdued – until the big singles started coming.

The elfin superstars surprised some at their December shows last year by being more jam band than electro anthem-makers. However at Splendour they were in unabashed crowd-pleasing mode. Two new songs made an appearance in the set-list, but they were overwhelmed by the likes of Weekend Wars, Electric Feel, Time To Pretend and galvanising closer Kids.

It's called We're Fucking Terrible and Were Easily The Most Boring Band at Splendour Bar None.

They're a three-hit wonder for a reason - their other songs really aren't very good.

To be fair, Panic at the Disco are probably more of a two hit wonder. They're certainly not in the same league as MGMT.

THEY WERE FREAKING ATROCIOUS! What a waste of the top slot...People were leaving en masse after 'Electric Feel'. Woefully bad Beatles rip-offs...

yeah they did only play for 45 mins i got over the fact that the flaming lips kept coming out on stage before they were on

i dont know from where i was i loved MGMT
but i guess that's because i've got a love for oracular spectacular as an album, not just a love for Kids/Electric Feel
and maybe also cause i was on the bar in front of him, all my friends who were further up said they absolutely hated it.

oh well you win some you lose some i guess

i was on some pretty good ugsdray but i still left early during MGMT. the sound was quality, there just wasnt much happening between the stage and the crowd to stage interested. I did enjoy myself for the most because i was going off with some real cool people in the mosh but i left to get a beer just before kids started.

i have an inkling that they may not return again. especially since people will be over electro soon enough

yeah i do agree, they're not the greatest at involving the crowd i think you really only enjoy it if you like and know all their songs, otherwise you're kinda just left standing there thinking hmm this is boring

they're definitely more of a studio band, which is why i'm always baffled when i hear they've been touring for over 2 years. you'd think if you kept getting mixed reviews from performances, you'd kinda take a step back and rethink what you're doing? ha

i heard they were getting booed in NZ

i reckon MGMT would have been good to watch if they played Splendour last year.

it was around Splendour time last year that electric feel was released, but a year has passed and the buzz had already pretty much died.

After seeing MGMT suck at Meredith and hearing this backlash after their Splendour slot, I have a theory about MGMT - Time To Pretend isn't as much as a song as it is their personal mission statement. They don't give a shit about playing bad sets because at the end of the day they still get paid, and as long as they save enough cash they can afford to live a comfortable lifestyle without working once the second album bombs/bookings stop rolling in.
