Nirvana top Triple J Hottest100

11 years after it last topped the Triple J Hottest 100 Of All Time, Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit has come in at #1 on the 2009 countdown. It holds prestigious company in the top five alongside Rage Against The Machine, Jeff Buckley, Joy Division and Radiohead.

Joy Division’s Love Will Tear Us Apart was a back-to-back winner of the poll in 1989 and 1990, before being pipped by Smells Like Teen Spirit in 1991. This year, the British greats came in at #4. The Top Ten was a locals-free zone, with the highest ranking Aussies Hilltop Hoods at #17 with festival staple The Nosebleed Section. There was also a regrettable lack of female talent in the Top 100, with male artists ruling the list.
